An acre producing 80% crop yield and 50% solar output delivers 130% productivity. The same plot of land will be 30% more productive when crops and solar are combined—a game-changing proposition for farmers seeking economic sustainability. #AgPV #EnergySky

California farmers expand revenue with vertical solar, strawberries
California farmers face mounting economic pressures, including high electricity prices. Do agrivoltaics offer a solution?

I like this way of describing agrivoltaics. It allows farmers to make money from agriculture PLUS from electricity sales so they can make way more from their farmland.

Such a huge potential there is for #AgPV. Farmers are going to embrace "planting" PV just because it makes so much sense.

Vertical configuration helps keep the panels clean. Since 2022, the owners have not cleaned the panels, aided by frequent rainfall and soil that is not dry. Vertical production profiles produce at times when the hourly price of electricity is highest. #AgPV 🔌💡 www.pv-magazine.com/2025/07/11/a...

When people ask me if agrivoltaics is going to play a significant role towards producing energy, I point out that global warming is making #AgPV a necessity in order to grow our food so I suspect that it will.

Yes, vertical PV panel installations should do better than fixed tilt in terms of hail.

Sure, but that requires me to point out that cheaper electricity is better than more expensive electricity.

Agrivoltaics is awesome, but in countries with tons of open land like the USA there is no good reason to subsidize the expensive forms of electricity.

The terrific thing about the model they've published is that can be adopted for the local agronomic practices as places as diverse as Oklahoma vs the crops grown in the region of California that uses Colorado River water/5

Republicans' efforts to stop renewable energy deployment is not going to work to stop American farmers from deploying solar on their land to help them grow better and be more profitable operations via agrivoltaics. #AgPV

Farms as power plants!

When solar modules are mounted 4 meters above soybean fields, they are up to 10 degrees Celsius cooler, compared with panels placed near bare ground. This cooling effect can make the panels more efficient and longer lasting.

I'm confident that this type of tracking PV installation cost too much in terms of $/kW, but they sure would reinforce my efforts to switch from calling them solar gardens rather than farms in order to deflect some of the astroturfing about losing farmland. #Solar #AgPV 🔌💡

I saw the supporting poles for this single axis tracking agPV system and thought about making a system that could raise and lower the height of the modules based on agronomic and operational reasons.

Perhaps too expensive, but might be popular?

Pigs with PV probably deserves more attention since the market for bacon is so much larger than is that for lamb.

Sure, we need to transition away from animal husbandry, but it's my opinion that first we need to end the practice of burning fossil fuels. #AgPV #EnergySky

They don't look as good as other mounting methods, but I think that installing PV like this by attaching them to suspended steel cables would work well for many farmers and seems quite easy for them to DIY too so I expect to see more #AgPV done this way soon. 🔌💡

Also, should we call it AgSolar?

Your post made me think that agrivoltaics as an industry is probably more advanced in Japan than perhaps anywhere. I don't know whether that is the case, but #AgPV is certainly growing there and this is an old graph too.

There's so much value added by publishing a model like this for AgPV in terms of helping combat the fossil fuel industry goal of turning all farmers against solar that I won't get to them all.

So, like the authors, I'll stick to Colorado, related to inability to come up with new river contract.
