A recent report by the Helen Bamber Foundation has revealed that hundreds of migrant children arriving in the UK have been wrongly assessed as adults by the Home Office, putting them at considerable risk. In 2025, at least 755 children were placed in adult hotels or detention centres following visual age assessments at the border. Freedom of information requests from 85 local authorities in England and Scotland found that of 1,454 cases referred to children's services, 52% were eventually confirmed as children, with the actual number likely higher due to incomplete reporting. New government data for the year to March 2026 showed that 6,420 individuals underwent initial age assessments, with 57% confirmed as children. Between July and December 2025, 326 children were incorrectly classified as adults before decisions were overturned, and 377 cases remain unresolved. Critics, including Kamena Dorling from the Helen Bamber Foundation, have called the Home Office's practice a serious safeguarding failure, highlighting that children are sometimes placed in adult detention or prisons. Plans to introduce AI facial-recognition for age estimation have raised further concerns about the potential risks and life-changing consequences for vulnerable children. Home Office officials insist that robust age assessments are crucial and that local authorities will conduct thorough evaluations where uncertainty remains.
