Hot take: Considering JFK's size and location, the AirTrain at JFK is completely adequate.
The AirTrain *fee* is an outrage, but you can get to the airport from Grand Central, Penn Station or Atlantic Terminal in very little time.

How many US airports can you think of that actually have a first-class rail connection to center city? To me, the ideal is that you can walk from the terminal and take a train that has a logically direct route to the city. Denver and SLC come to mind. SFO, ORD and Dulles are not horrible. What else?
