Iridium is buying (the rest of) Aireon to bolster its aviation business.

Aireon provides aircraft position data monitoring via ADS-B in space. Iridium operates the LEO satellite constellation that the Aireon payloads fly on.

How the product matures will be interesting to watch.

Thinking about possible names for the hypothetical flying type eeveeloution and I swear to god they had better have done due diligence and are not going to make it Aireon … especially right now, instant ick.

Isn't this Musks wet dream?

Rocket Lab will purchase Iridium for ~$8bn in cash/stock.

The deal gives #$RKLB access to #$IRDM's L-band spectrum and customer contracts, key to continued growth for the manufacturer/launch operator.

Comes just after IRDM bought Aireon.

Oh shit. I didn’t realize Iridium bought Aireon back from Nav Canada. So it’s probably even stupider that they didn’t just buy this US-based system, then.

The first FR24 test was with a nano satellite in 2016, before Aireon was in orbit (www.flightradar24.com/blog/trackin...).

Since then FR24 mostly moved to Spire's constellation (www.flightradar24.com/blog/satelli...).

I don't know Spire's coverage, unfortunately. But it seems to not be 100%.

FR24 doesn't use Aireon (which does have truly global coverage). There are other satellite-based solutions which are not fully global also on the market.

There is still the need for the aircraft to transmit (which they should), but the coverage is available.

The biggest (most recent) technology investment was partnering in the Aireon space-based ADS-B system

This extended surveillance into the far north and North Atlantic - allowing for more efficient operations (reduced separation requirements - more fuel-efficient routings)

Colin, why haven't you asked DF why he would sign a contract with Starlink 9 days AFTER the US election debacle? And why not Aireon?

Why not ask him about this and his drug-dealing?

Why not ask him about the Science Centre? Why an Austrian spa, not Ontarian?

For context, read about the existing work by Aireon on space-based ADS-B with the Iridium satellite network.

SpaceX did play a role in launching the 2nd-gen Iridium-NEXT satellites, but I would urge the FAA to prevent Elon from meddling in any aviation safety systems.

Sometimes I randomly get recommended YouTube streams with very few people watching. I sometimes don't click on them, but sometimes I do and I usually love spending time in there cause they are usually so nice. Shoutout to Aireon from Wii Sports tonight, so much fun watching Wii Party tonight!

this is prettty unclear about whether they are using aireon data. from what i've seen their update interval essentially doesn't exceed 30 seconds even in the spots with the worst coverage but scihub is letting me down trying to confirm it
