On the Kaulana Manu nature trail, I got what is either my best ever image of an 'alawi, or else the roundest, cutest 'amakihi ever. I've consulted with a few bird experts, and nobody is really sure, tho we're leaning 'alawi. In either case, ADORABLE BORB. :) 🦉🌿📷 #birds

a thing I really liked in the finale was Dana hugging Alawi when she teared up looking at the fireworks. Alawi, as a Muslim Filipina woman who has just seen a co-worker brutalized by ICE, presumably has profoundly mixed feelings about July 4th!

Seeing this circulating online based on a (likely purposeful) misreading of the EU's post-code list for the EU-Israel Technical Arrangement, neither the Dutch ban nor the EU list designate Syrian, Palestinian or Alawi communities as settlements.

They are also known as the Hawaiʻi creeper because they forage by “creeping” up & down branches & tree trunks, using their bills to fleck off bark in search of food.

This particular statement might not be much to get worked up about, but I suspect the phenomenon it represents—frustrated conservatism as both fuel & vehicle for contestation, latching onto symbolic affronts to wage culture war—will be a big thing in Syria’s not-distant future.
Several dozen Syrian Islamic scholars and conservative figures, including a few ex-rebels and a parliamentarian (Kinan Nahhas, ex-Ahrar) urge the state to protect Syria’s Islamic identity, which, they imply, is threatened by an overly permissive attitude to secular public events.
