#FrescoFriday - A fresco in the Fourth Pompeian Style depicting Alcestis, Apollo and Diane observing the prophecy being read to Admetus. From Herculaneum, AD 50-79.

In Euripides' play Alcestis, the prophecy concerning Admetus' death is that he will die unless someone willingly dies in his place.

This fresco may be a traditional wedding, but some scholars think it represents Alcestis in Euripides’ play.
Her husband Admetus is condemned to die young. Alcestis chooses to sacrifice herself in his place. Though it appears to be a tragedy, this play has an uplifting conclusion.

Admetus Actias

An immensely gifted wizard that is Alcestis' husband. Soul was prior encased in a lamp. The more level headed between the two compared to Alcestis' constant positive energy. A stark difference from when they first met.

These Bronze Age panels may not measure up to the craftsmanship of 21st-century comic art, but there's an ineffable something to them that I think has been lost over time.

This painting, by the Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt (c. 1854-1905), was inspired by stories about the ancient Greek mythological figure, Alcestis. For more on the art and mythology, read our article here: thehistorianshut.com/2021/05/30/a...

Alcestis by Katharine Beutner

I'm reading this one right now and it's so good. Alcestis is such an underrated character and this book fleshes her out in such a fun and interesting way. Also another grief book. All the best retellings are about grief
