I have found power in the mysteries of thought,
exaltation in the changing of the Muses;
I have been versed in the reasonings of men;
but Fate is stronger than anything I have known.

Because of this, he encountered some trouble during his work: he had to fight against Heracles, who forcibly prevented him from taking Alcestis away, or he was tricked and imprisoned by Sisyphus, until Ares came to his rescue.

This is Stephen Franklin, but in some respects he is also David Rudkin, the author of the play. Those ‘laboriously written-out’ Greek paradigms on the wall at top left and centre are written by him…because the graphic design team forgot to do so. #PendasFen
Stephen Franklin sits at his bedroom desk. On the wall beyond are several sheets in which Greek paradigms have been precisely drawn. Props order, 14 June 1973: Stephen’s bedroom *The books of Sallust, Cicero, Livy, Hecuba by Euripides, Alcestis by Euripides, Agamemnon by Aeschylus, Plato’s Republic Book X, Kitson’s Elementary Harmony, Part II, and a softback copy of MacPherson’s Melody and Harmony. *AFM to source an LP of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius Part II as well as assorted classical records for dressing (not itemised). *School labels produced by Graphics to be added to exercise books. *Twelve pages of Greek paradigms to be supplied by Graphics. Rudkin spoke to The Edge is Where the Centre Is authors William Fowler and Gareth Evans about graphics ordered for the shooting of 1K (“Twelve pages of Greek paradigms” to decorate Stephen’s walls) not being available on arrival. “My interference, such as it was, on the design front was in matters of detail. This was fairly common in television at the time: you could have a really wonderful concept at the art-director level but down at the execution level sometimes people could be quite loose-thinking. I mean, I remember writing all the Greek verbs out on paper the first morning we shot in the rectory and they said, “Oh, we forgot to do the Greek verbs.” And I said, “If you give me a piece of paper, I’ll write them out.” So I wrote out the whole paradigm of that verb there and then, and that makes quite a nice art object on the wall.” (pp.36-37) Rudkin’s paradigms survive in his British Library papers.

The End and Author and Illustrator info The ship's cat is introduced as a patriotic swashbuckling crew member of the English privateer Alcestis. After attacking a lone Spanish ship, the Alcestis is defeated by Spanish reinforcements and its crew taken as captives to the Panamanian port of Chagres. The ship's cat is initially imprisoned, but the gaoler's daughter takes pity on him and has him released to serve in the gaoler's kitchen. After the gaoler and his companions become drunk celebrating Saint Philip's Day, the ship's cat steals the keys to the gaol and releases his shipmates. Together, they steal a ship from the harbor and sail for home, pursued by their erstwhile captors. Their pursuers are frightened off by the sudden appearance of Sir Francis Drake (outward bound on his global circumnavigation of 1577). After Drake departs, the ship's cat reveals that he has discovered a hoard of treasure in the ship's hold. The crew sail home to England, where they are greeted as heroes and the cat is knighted by Queen Elizabeth I.

I didn't know the story of Admetus and Alcestis. *Lots* of drama ;)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admetus...
Apollo later helped Admetus win the hand of Alcestis, the daughter of Pelias, king of Iolcus. Alcestis had so many suitors that Pelias set an apparently impossible task to the suitors—to win the hand of Alcestis, they must yoke a boar and a lion to a chariot. Apollo harnessed the yoke with the animals[12] and Admetus drove the chariot to Pelias, and thus married Alcestis. Admetus, however, neglected to sacrifice to Artemis, Apollo's sister. The offended goddess filled the bridal chamber with snakes and again, Apollo came to Admetus' aid. Apollo advised Admetus to sacrifice to Artemis, and the goddess removed the snakes.

These Bronze Age panels may not measure up to the craftsmanship of 21st-century comic art, but there's an ineffable something to them that I think has been lost over time.
