In Greek Alcibiades was definitely spelled with a kappa (Ἀλκιβιάδης), which must be a hard k sound.

The 'alsibiades' pronunciation of his name is a convention, but it's anachronistic, like the English pronunciation of Caesar (compare German Kaiser, which is the same word).

I'm still baffled by this alternate romanization of names in The Last of the Wine when it comes to C's and K's. I looked up three names and the C sound seems to be the right one in Alcibiades and Thucydides (referencing the Cambridge Dictionary website audio clips) but K is always used in the book.

Emphatic goes into the Oct. 2 Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland 2-for-2 for Brendan Walsh. The Nyquist filly comes off a Sorority Stakes win at Monmouth and has deeper experience behind that unbeaten record.
@FourStarSales grad Emphatic enters the Oct. 2 Alcibiades (G1) at @keeneland undefeated, with a foundation that runs deeper than what meets the eye. Read more:

it's actually hilarious how much of a Joe Rogan gym-bro Xenophon's Socrates is. Aristophanes wrote a whole "fuck this guy in particular" play

clearly Plato is trying to emotionally process a growing realization that his favorite workout podcast actually sucks -- especially the Alcibiades spin-off

Love the idea of Alcibiades in the Symposium as the ur messy bitch.

dude had Alcibiades howling like a cartoon zoot-suited wolf at a night club and straight up philosophy-zoned his ass

Socrates managed to bag Alcibiades, the hottest dude in Athens, and basically drove him insane because he was like "love is, uh, shapes" when Alcibiades just wanted to FUCK.

Damn. I’m reading this book on Alcibiades by Jacqueline de Romilly… and it’s really good, lolol. She gets my boy

Listen I know this is the most Me thing I could possibly say but: understanding Alcibiades is key to understanding this moment of civic and moral decay in American life

This went live on Dec 1, 2022, a day after ChatGPT launched.

#Stoic philosopher Massimo Pigliucci and I asked why brilliant #leaders go bad, via Socrates and his star student, Alcibiades.

Can #virtue be taught? Is #transhumanism a dodge?

With #AI, character just got scaled. snglrty.co/41BZBd6

I have no doubt there was some element of that among his accusers but remember, what we know of him comes from his friends & admirers (Plato, Xenophon). You’d think they’d dress him up - and he still looks bad.
And then his friends, students, lovers: Alcibiades, Critias the worst.
All in my essay.

I guess the ancient Athenian mid to upper class was small anyway but I'm five chapters in and the protagonist has personally met Alcibiades and Socrates (or Sokrates in this spelling) already.
