A lot of ppl didn’t know they became functioning alcoholics during Covid.
I think people have a hard time admitting they have “regular” addictions, like sex or gambling or alcohol, because “addict” has a connotation to it. You hear addiction & think homeless on the street causing harm to people. No, you can be a functioning addict to something.

society "prefers" it in the same way that alcoholics prefer to spend all their money alcohol. it's addictive and bad for you in the long run but it feels good in the immediacy of it. you could also compare it to gambling in that it's basically designed to addict you.

It's so great to see that there's actual medication now to help alcoholics. I found the hardest part of quitting drinking was that you need a whole new friend group. A lot of people aren't comfortable with someone who doesn't want to drink anymore.
