Interfaith discussion group was great tonight. We had a spirited discussion about almsgiving, charity, mutual aid, personal responsibility and wealth hoarding. Seeing how these things are addressed in different religious communities was very enlightening!

I’m personally a believer in the practice of “non-strategic almsgiving” for individuals — ie keeping cash on hand for when a circumstance needs it — but what is a virtue for the individual is simply poor policy for the institution. Its giving should be bigger picture and strategic: doing MORE good.
