1. Neonate vision has myopia, the retinal→LGN→cortex mapping is spatially disorganised in neonates (ask someone with amblyopia what they can see with their amblyopic eye).
2. Yes binocularity as mainly signal/noise. And combine that with the very high contrast at the limbus of the eye pupil/sclera.

And it does that by looking for low correlations: uncorrelated outputs in the cortex must come from widely separated inputs on the retina.
And it does it very well - usually. If the inputs are all too correlated (strabismus or poor focus) the you get amblyopia.

I know it's grossly normal to mock someone for amblyopia because I never remember what it's called, since everyone around me just calls it by a derogatory term.

Amblyopia is lazy eye, where your brain is wired to ignore input from one eye. Strabismus is being cross-eyed, where your pupils don’t quite align. For strabismus, surgery can help. Both these conditions can result in BVD.

Our medical system is so fragmented and siloed. I had an optometrist who diagnosed me with amblyopia when I was younger, but never mentioned there were corrective lens available. It’s maddening.

These experiments helped us understand what is known as amblyopia, or lazy eye, which is what I have.
My brain overwhelmingly relies on input from my left eye. My right eye is structurally normal, but it’s quite weak. Doctors were never able to correct its vision to more than 20/40 or 20/60.

Well, while researchers AFAIK (haven't checked in A WHILE) so far don't really make this connection, check this case report out of someone via visual training+yoga serendipiously curing themselves of Aphantasia, which stems from before it got named as Aphantasia:
