Kowloon Walled City-inspired Suzuki’s hideout BG

Keita Sakai, one of the youngest BG artists of Art Director Shinji Kimura’s team, did these.

So much evocative “lived-in” detail. I’m particularly fond of the “Slippery Springs” (ヌルヌル温泉) towel hanging.

Nice way to see camera mapping for hand-painted CG hybrid BG of scene 1 shot 6. Mapped textures look okay from perspective of the taking camera, but ridiculously distorted from any other angle.

Art director Shinji Kimura’s Kiddie Kastle（子供の城）designs owe so much to my battered copies of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s photographic “typologies” (Gas Tanks, Water Towers, Blast Furnaces…), fantastic collections of industrial forms and texture.

Shinji was so great at reusing drawings to create larger views, expanding the world of Tekkonkinkreet. As often as not, this was done on the copy machine, with scissors and tape. I love seeing Tower 1 get wrecked Kiddie Kastle Tower 2 (shares DNA with the Becher water towers) Tower 3, reminiscent of a steel factory blast furnace

Something in Nishimi’s characters that got to me was, without particularly resembling TEKKON era Taiyo, they have a charm/warmth/emotion that belongs to the same world (while being distinct). I’d never seen anime chara like them 💜 💜 💜

I discovered a #Nishimi drawing, forgotten on the copy machine, after he'd wrapped work on #Mindgame (directed by childhood pal Yuasa).

We'd just begun our search for an artist to render Taiyo's characters as anime, and there he was, right under our noses.
