Congratulations, Mr Trump. You have created an anti-Americanist form of Lithuanian patriotism. In Lithuania. Lithuania

I genuinely wonder when Americanist political scientists will collectively admit the US has transitioned into autocracy. Scholars' pipelines of research are always set up long in advance, but it's still pretty surprising how little it seems to have budged

Not from me. I’m an Americanist. Hitler is a study all by himself.

At Americanist conferences a white whale should come and destroy the podium
I propose to make universal the old policy of the Blackfriars conference at the American Shakespeare Center:

If you do not end your paper on time, you will be forced to exit, pursued by a bear. Literally, a bear will come take your paper from you.

So many times I tell my Americanist friends that African countries teach us a lot about how to do democracy...

Sierra Leone’s former president charged with treason for alleged involvement in failed coup attempt
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — Former President Ernest Bai Koroma has been charged with treason for his alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt in November, Sierra Leone’s government said Wednesday.Koroma has also been charged with misprision of treason, which is the crime of concealing knowledge of treasonable acts, according to a statement from the ministry of information and civic education. On Nov. 26, dozens of gunmen launched an attack in the West African nation’s capital of Freetown during which they broke into Sierra Leone’s key armory and into a prison where the majority of the more than 2,000 inmates were freed. At least 18 members of the security forces were killed during the clashes. More than 50 suspects, including military officers, have been arrested so far.The charges against Koroma were announced a day after a dozen people were charged with similar offenses in connection with the failed coup. Although he has officially retired from politics, Koroma remains an influential figure within his political party and often hosts prominent politicians in his hometown of Makeni. There have been political tensions in Sierra Leone since President Julius Maada Bio was reelected for a second term in a disputed vote in June. Two months after he was reelected, police said they arrested several people, including senior military officers, for allegedly planning to use protests “to undermine peace.”

Incuriosity about the past, and an unlimited willingness to reinvent the wheel, is one of the most puzzling intellectual pathologies

It’s been a great visit to Portland. It has reminded me of that time that my wife got a job offer from an Oregon university, and didn’t work out because a tenured Latin Americanist professor (the only one in the history department) refused to have another Latin Americanist colleague.

Nods in German Americanist.
People so damned hot to make this moment either Hitler's Germany or Putin's Russia and just ignoring the actual American context is not helping.

If I can be EXTREMELY bitchy, only an Americanist (Faust) would make such a claim
Came across this on Instagram and was immediately annoyed - most people currently alive can’t read most historical documents for a myriad of reasons that far exceed handwriting. That’s why people who actually do read those documents (historians) learn palaeography!

The kind of racist who thinks being an Americanist is terrific but an Africanist is a joke...
It is worth saying that putting “Africana studies” in scare quotes as if it’s a ridiculous concept is not a political argument. It’s just racism. “Africa is not worthy of a major” is the implication. Yeah dude you’re just racist. (From Gerard Baker at the WSJ today)

I'm in a department of two. This is literally the genesis of me becoming an early Americanist.
Also I do think if they’re gonna keep expanding the purview demanded of medievalists (now expected to teach medieval AND Shakespeare) u better watch out. Like ok, you want me to push to covering a full 500 years of English lit? I can do it but why should I pretend I can’t also teach the next 500
April 13, 2026 at 3:38 PM
For the 'pre-modernists teach everything,' I've taught:
1) Early Modern Europe
2) U.S. Military History
3) U.S. Naval History
4) World Comparative Myth
5) Global Military History (pre-history to present)
6) Latin

But heaven forfend the Americanist teach 18th century Britain. Or anyone teach Africa.

Another brilliant and informative episode of The American Vandal by @mattseybold.bsky.social and guests. I swear I learn more about the academy in one episode of this podcast than a year's worth of CHE and Inside Higher combined, by a factor of x100. theamericanvandal.substack.com/p/half-castl...
