#MolluscMonday Neither nautiloid nor ammonite, this is an early ammonoid, Timanites keyserlingi (Order Agoniatitida) of Devonian age. The large body chamber in this specimen is sediment-filled, whereas the chambers forming the phragmocone are infilled with calcite.

#MolluscMonday The florid chamber-dividing sutures of the ammonoid Phylloceras are here emphasised by painting one of the chambers white. The function of such complex sutures is debated.

For my first post here, I'm sharing a little collage of my work: three natural science illustrations and one coin design. I've been a self-employed illustrator for nearly 25 years now, so this is a small sampling. Many more examples here: emilydamstra.com

For the first #fossilfriday of 2026, I present some lovely marine fossils of lower Carboniferous (Visean) age, from the Bowland Shale Fm (formally the Poyllvaaish fm) from the Isle of Man.

These are found in some very famous steps in London… anyone know where?

Ammonites (a type of ammonoid) are an extinct group of marine cephalopods. They disappeared at the end of the Cretaceous.
Their shells were made mostly of aragonite — the same mineral you still find in mother-of-pearl today.
Usually though, during fossilization that aragonite turns into calcite⤵️
