Potato blight warning.. We're probably exporting more Irish beef now than was taken from our lands whilst our people were forced to starve. 2026, what's left, we spend between €7 to €11 now for 454g of mince/ground beef. #AnGortaMór #TheGreatHunger #PotatoBlight #PotatoFamine #EconomicFamine

This book is not "about" the "an Gorta Mór" (Irish Potato Famine), but it's the TRUE horror. I'm a sucker for really emotional horror and this is it. Not to be missed. Fab audio narration, too. #thishousewillfeed #anGortaMór #mariatureaud #booksky #horrorsky #recordedbooks

On this day in 1849, the Doolough Valley death march began, with hundreds of people forced to march nearly twenty kilometres in order for British ‘Poor Law Union’ officials to ‘verify’ that they were eligible to receive food relief. #AnGortaMór

I'll end this here at the bombed out St Lukes Church, home to the official #liverpool #AnGortaMór memorial.

The memorial remembers the millions who died or were forced to flee Ireland. This site honours their memory and acknowledges Liverpool’s role.

For many, they weren’t so lucky. It's no surprise that during the Famine, Liverpool had the largest workhouse in the world. Thousands of Irish families were forced here, enduring institutionalised hardship. It was a site of immense suffering on an industrial scale.

Conditions in Liverpool were no better, sometimes were worse. Lace Street was notoriously cited as the most densely populated street in the UK. Families were often packed into damp, dark cellar dwellings.

After the trauma of the crossing, the struggle turned to finding a place to exist. This is Price Street in Birkenhead, this was one of the earliest hubs for Irish settlement in Liverpool. Conditions were brutal. #AnGortaMor #Liverpool

Arrival didn't mean safety. For the thousands who arrived with nothing, the Relief Station was the first port of call. This is where they queued for meager rations of food and support. It was the frontline of a humanitarian crisis that the city was struggling to manage.

This is Clarence Dock. This was the gateway to hope. Between 1845 and 1852, this was the specific landing stage where the steamships from Ireland arrived. 1.3 million people stepped off the boats here.

It’s early and cold. But I’m spending today walking the #Liverpool Irish Famine Trail, tracing the footsteps of the 1.3 million people who arrived here during #AnGortaMór
I’ll post much of it here, so join me on the journey.
