On Saturday I went to a fantastic concert at the former St Michael's church in Ancoats. Built to serve the areas Italian community, ten years ago it was empty and facing an uncertain future. It just shows what can be done with some faith and imagination

See the recent fuss about demolition of a redundant grade 2 church in Manchester. This building had been empty for 30 years with no reuse found until it had to be demolished for public safety. Fewer people believe so churches become redundant.

Nearly the whole of Ancoats was flattened before/around the Commonwealth games. Long before AD arrived.

Well, it's only proper that Oxford Street should be a #EuropeanStyleBoulevard like the Champs Elysee, Unter den Linden or Great Ancoats Street.

No idea! Di had a convo with a bloke around the late 90s, she's just told me, & he was buying properties for pennies. He told her about the impending Ancoats marina. So it was actually before the games.

2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the Manchester & Salford Anarchist Bookfair.
The first Manchester Radical Bookfair was organised in December 2001 at Bridge 5 Mill, the home of MERCi in Ancoats, on the edge of the city centre.

Just went to The Wheatsheaf in Ancoats, Manchester.

On the wall outside is a full-wall mural of The Smiths bass legend Andy Rourke.

I love this guy. And this tribute is unbelievable.

OPINION | The brutal way in which the former All Souls church in Ancoats has been reduced to rubble shows how little this handsome church was valued by the authorities, writes Elizabeth Hopkirk.

'Good said he felt Manchester was becoming a “northern version of London” as an “insane” property crisis compounded the misery for the city’s 20,000 people on the social housing register.'

UAE investment reshapes Manchester's urban landscape amid housing and social divides
The Guardian has uncovered a significant rise in UAE-linked property ownership in Manchester over the past decade, with Emirati developers now controlling land equivalent to 260 football pitches. This development, centred around Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan's ownership of Manchester City Football Club, has transformed areas like Ancoats and New Islington, creating a stark contrast between luxury developments and surrounding deprived neighbourhoods. The article details how a £1bn Manchester Life development, sold to Abu Dhabi for £5m, has delivered only 2,039 of the promised 6,000 homes, with just 8% being affordable housing. Meanwhile, nearby food banks serve communities facing severe deprivation, highlighting the growing social divide. Former Manchester City Council leader Richard Leese defended the deals as 'a phenomenally good deal for Manchester,' while critics argue the city is becoming a 'northern version of London' with an 'insane' property crisis. The article also reveals a 10-year collaboration agreement between the council and Abu Dhabi that included a gag clause preventing council politicians from announcing the deal without approval from Sheikh Mansour's firm. Andy Burnham, now Prime Minister, approved a £55m loan to Mansour's Jersey-registered property firms despite previously criticizing such deals. The council's relationship with Abu Dhabi has faced scrutiny, with internal investigations finding 'weaknesses in documentation, monitoring and assurance' around these deals. The article concludes that Manchester's model of urban development, heavily reliant on international finance, faces questions about its long-term sustainability and social impact.

N/B It also tells you how little Northern dominated New Labour cared about Northern Transport.

(N/B TfL people told me there was not interest ca.2008 in North, hence Ancoats widening etc).
Another way to look at this:

In two years (2006-07), France built more tram track than the *entire length of all tram track in England combined at that time*. They built 133% of England's entire network in two years!

Between 2004 and 2011 meanwhile, England added *0km*
I'll stop posting about trams soon. But this is an amazing chart @centreforcities.bsky.social
