This 541 CE ivory #diptych leaf from the #Bargello depicts Basilius, the very last ordinary #Roman #consul in history. But to understand what #Justinian actually abolished the following year, we have to look back at how Rome retroactively manufactured its own constitutional history. #ReliefWednesday

For roughly 1000 years, all European and many African and west Asian musicians studied at least one text: De institutione musica by Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius. It was still fairly prevalent well into the late 1800s and one of many philosophical texts Boethius contributed to western academia.

I read The Consolation of Philosophy, by Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (Victor Watts translation, 1969, rev. 1999).
Written while in prison for a trumped up charge of treason, for which he was executed (and brutally tortured, though accounts vary as to details) in 524 AD.

The Roman philosopher Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (c. 480–525/26), was a hugely important figure in the history of Western Music. His influential translations of Ancient Greek philosophies of music framed the art as a manifestation of nature's interconnectedness and unity.
