And in case you're unaware why people are freaking out over this, learn about its tortured production and its legacy in my Story of Animerama series on Renaissance Josei:
The Story of Animerama: Belladonna of Sadness
By 1971, things looked grim for both the Animerama project and Mushi Productions.  Cleopatra had flopped, Tezuka had resigned from the stu...

The Animerama trilogy.
what anime films would people like to see on the criterion channel? let's assume that anything might be possible, no matter how improbable or silly

Son of a bitch, Story of Animerama got waitlisted.

I swear to god, if those Manly Battleships assholes got multiple 18+ slots while my panel goes waiting, I'm going to be mad.

Hey! My Story of Animerama essays got a shout-out in the latest TWIA! Thanks @riderstrike.bsky.social!

It's official: I will be not just an attendee at this year's Animazement, but also a panelist!

2 of my previous panels have been approved (Shojo Manga's Lost Generation and The Story of Animerama), as well as a new one: The Shocking True History of Tokyopop.

(The old art reposts continue...)
Pages three and four of Stocking Stuffer. In retrospect I definitely had some 70s animerama influence with the breast play scene, the whole sequence is begging to be animated to the tune of a Mari Henmi song.

Story of Animerama went great! Finally got to do the uncensored version of the panel (complete with drive-in style pre-show). Room was roughly half-full but the crowd was engaged, particularly with the clips.

Someday I'm going to get to do this at Otakon. Someday!
Made it to @brainchild129.bsky.social's "The Story of Animerama" panel.

So far I've done panels on josei manga, shojo isekai, old shojo manga, Japanese stop-motion animation, the Animerama movie trilogy, the history of Tokyopop, and a history of Princess Ai.

...have you noticed some common themes yet?
What anime-related topic could you give a convention panel about?

Well, it took me a bit but I got all of my panel applications for Otakon done. This year I've submitted 5 panels:
- Story of Animerama (gonna keep doing it 'til they accept it)
- 1998: The Worst Year For Anime
- The Shocking True History of Tokyopop

Boo no Animerama, boo Otakon

Oh, this is the film that was initially released as Cleopatra: Queen of Sex in the United States in a cynical attempt to— Astro Boy! :) —which of course was completely removed from the context of the larger animerama trilogy including Belladonna of— is that a gun?
For good or ill, Cleopatra (1970) is a film where things will not stop happening.

It's official! I will be a panelist at this year's Anime Central!

Both Shojo Manga's Lost Generation and my new Candy Candy panel got approved (Story of Animerama and Princess Ai both got waitlisted).

Not a bad way to make my ACen debut. 😁

Just got word I will have THREE panels at ACen '26!

Over 50 years ago, Mushi Productions made the Animerama trilogy, a series of adult anime films. Join me on Friday 5/15 @ 9PM to hear the tale of 3 ill-fated films, the 2 directors behind them, and the studio that died making them!

This weekend I will be presenting three panels at Animazement! The first is my first 18+ panel: The Story of Animerama, which will be at 10PM on Friday the 23rd at Room 306B. This will cover the wild history behind the creation (and creators) of 1001 Nights, Cleopatra, and Belladonna of Sadness.

A Thousand & One Nights (1969)
First of the Animerama trilogy

Hoo boy, this was an experience. This is not for everyone you need a pretty high tolerance for slower and older stuff, and theres so many problematic things going on in it.

Soundtrack is amazing, has some stikingly psychedelic scenes

Made it to @brainchild129.bsky.social's "The Story of Animerama" panel.

For the record, they are:
- Shojo Manga's Lost Generation
- Rudolph to Rilakkuma: A Century of Japanese Stop-Motion
- The Wonderful World of YAS
- Story of Animerama
- 1998: The Worst Year For Anime
- The Shocking True History of Tokyopop

So...Cleopatra.

Some might remember the time I wrote ~15k words (and made a panel) about the history of Mushi Pro's Animerama trilogy, aka that time they made animated pink films to try and make Tezuka happy and save the studio only to utterly fail and push the studio towards bankruptcy.
January 23, 2026 at 5:15 AM
Looks like the latest round of Otakon panel rejections is going out.

Alas, my new Candy Candy panel got rejected, as did Story of Animerama (...do I need to retool the title to make it punchier?).

3 down, 1 to go, here's hoping the Mecha Kaikan will save me.
May 10, 2026 at 5:58 AM
Mailbag Day! It's all Animerama related with the trilogy on laserdisc and also a VHD for Belladonna too.

Also I think all three of these laserdiscs have audio commentaries from some of the crew who worked on the film's. IIRC none of them are on any of the current releases or even translated.

Well, this is a first for any con I've gone to:

Otakon upgraded Story of Animerama from 'declined' to 'waitlisted.' This is one I admittedly emailed them about to ask why it was declined (in the hopes of retooling it next year), so maybe that was enough for someone to give it a second look.
May 18, 2026 at 6:24 PM
I'm so happy to do Story of Animerama again. Make sure to show up early for this one - there WILL be a pre-show.

I'm also excited for Shocking True History of Tokyopop, which will be co-presented with @thegreatsg.bsky.social. It covers two of my fave things: manga history and mocking Stu Levy.

To everyone who got a badge ribbon from @brainchild129.bsky.social’s #Animerama panel last night, you’re welcome! 👍
