Ok see this white jelly #Tremella fuciformis fungi, it has just monstered a #Annulohypoxylon species fungi that was eating the log. Anyway if you look close you will notice black hairs. Thats #Sporothrix epigloea, a fungi growing out of the white jelly fungi. Law of the jungle. Everything is food.

In our new paper we have described several new species of Hypoxylaceae and found that the genus Rostrohypoxylon is obsolete because it is nested in Annulohypoxylon in the multi-locus phylogeny. Secondary metabolite profiles of all taxa are also reported.

Annulohypoxylon thousarianum, Trametes betulina and Ganoderma brownii. There is a lot of fog this week in Oakland so the fog drip areas will have actual mushrooms - the area above highway 24 is the best fog drip spot in Oakland, other fog drip spots include Pacifica, Point Reyes and Mt. Tam

TIL of Sporothrix epigloea, which is a parasitic fungus that grows as tiny black 'thorns' on the surface of Tremella fuciformis, the white jelly mushroom (a delicacy). T. fuciformis is, itself, a parasitic fungus. T. fuciformis grows as a yeast until it meets its host, a Annulohypoxylon fungus!

I love the name of these weird black fungi that I see growing on oak trees in northern California: cramp balls (Annulohypoxylon thouarsianum). They're maybe 8cm or so in diameter.
