Tree at Anping Old Fort. Tainan, Taiwan. The fort contains the remains of an old Dutch fort called Fort Zeelandia. The Dutch captured, then held, Anping for forty years beginning in 1624. Such a complex and fascinating history. #ChristineTravels

NEW: Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration deployed two patrol boats (PP-10059, PP-10079) and Anping-class offshore patrol boat CIJIN to detain 🇹🇬 Togo-flagged cargo ship HONG TAI 58 off the coast of Tainan, southwestern Taiwan.
The ship is suspected of damaging submarine cables.

probably the hardest part about rotk for me is that so many placenames are historical and there isn't really a good searchable map for that stuff. the nine provinces and their capitals are easy but it's hard to track down stuff like ganling or anping

Greetings from a balmy, hazy Friday morning in Tainan's Anping District. This is where the Dutch landed 401 years ago in 1624, dragging Taiwan into four centuries of colonization.
Coincidentally, that same year the Dutch also established the colony of New Amsterdam, in what is now lower Manhattan.
