Sphinxes + knotted snakes on roof ridge, female heads + antefixes decorating edges.
Sides display floral + animal designs + figures including Charon + Etruscan divinities.
Stone once plastered w colourful polychrome, c. 3C BC.
In BM 🏺
Reddish stone of volcanic origin was used to carve the large sarcophagus. Its lid has the form of a pitched roof, with heavy tubular ridge and side beams, with antefixes in the ends. A sphinx sits at each end of the roof and knotted snakes writhe in the centre. Female heads decorate the triangular pediments. Along the long side visible is a narrow panel with scroll design. Two inturning figures are at either end, the one on the left holds a mallet and snake, and represents Charon. The other is a warrior.

Imagine seeing a Roman building in ancient Wales, the tiled roof lined with antefixes proudly proclaiming the presence of the Legio XX Valeria Victrix with their name and symbol, the wild boar. The Twentieth was among the legions involved with the construction of Hadrian's Wall. 🏺 1/

Images depict characters from Southeast Asian mythology and folklore, such the naga serpent.

#SarcophagusSaturday at the #BritishMuseum offers us this splendid stone #sarcophagus in #nenfro, a volcanic #tufo, with a lid like a pitched roof with a #sphinx at each end. The box itself has two figures on each side, male and female. It was once stuccoed and painted all over. #AncientBluesky 🏺
STONE SARCOPHAGUS WITH ROOF LID. ETRUSCAN, C. 325-250 BCE. BRITISH MUSEUM This sarcophagus is striking for its lid, each end decorated with a sphinx. Knotted snakes lie across its centre. Female heads decorate the angles of the pediment with antefixes below. Along both sides are antefixes with female heads. All sides of the chest are decorated with floral and animal designs in low relief. Inturning figures appear at both ends of each long side: here we see a winged female, perhaps one of the Lasas (attendant divinities), holding a hammer and probably a nail, which when struck into a wall symbolises finality and time fulfilled. The male figure is a winged soldier. At centre is an inscription with the name of the deceased, which unfortunately is Vel Urinates.

A very similar pair of grappolo earrings can be seen at the #MetMuseum, and an Etruscan polychrome shell antefix featuring the head of a maenad - also at the Met - shows how a very large pair would be worn, the pointed end downwards. 🏺 2/

This type of earring - frequently seen in Etruscan art - is called a grappolo; its general shape resembles a bunch of grapes. The rounded shield part at the top has a series of small circles in a pattern, and below that are the globes, looking like grapes. Etruscan, 4th-early 3rd century BCE, gold. Met Museum, New York (18.103.1, .2) On temple roofs, maenad antefixes often alternate with satyr-head antefixes. Here, the maenad wears an elaborate diadem and very large grape-cluster earrings, a type of jewelry especially popular in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.

The provenance is not clear, but the style is certainly in keeping with the southern Italy terracotta relief style often seen in tiles and antefixes.

💕Venus and Mars⚔️

This terracotta antefix depicts Venus, the goddess of love, and Mars, the god of war, together. The striking detail is the paint residue that suggests a beautiful visual harmony to the piece. Even the covers for roof tiles could be decorated in ancient Rome!

This reconstruction from the museum shows how the antefixes alternated between several characters - Gorgons, horned Achelous heads, maenads, and Sileni. Below the eaves were additional painted terracotta decorations.

For #ReliefWednesday we're being scared off by a magnificent #antefix from the roof of the gigantic temple of #Minerva at #Veii just north of #Rome. The #sculptor is thought to be #Vulca, also author of the first statue of #Capitoline #Jupiter. #ClassicsBluesky 🏺
VULCA. MEDUSA ANTEFIX, C. 510 CE. MUSEO NAZIONALE ETRUSCO DI VILLA GIULIA This truly terrifying antefix is a masterpiece of terracotta Etruscan art. It comes from the Portonaccio temple sanctuary of Menrva, the Etruscan predecessor of Minerva, at Veii, in the same complex as the famous Apollo of Veii, one of the treasures of the Villa Giulia. Apollo and Hercules are battling on the pediment, and both have been ascribed to the sculptor Vulca, along with the roof antefixes, this one included, though the museum now more cautiously describes the artist as the "Master of Apollo". Here, within a sort of stylised scallop shell that regularises the profile of the antefix, is the frightening face of the Gorgon Medusa, very much the monstrous fanged leering monster of archaic art, and nothing like the beautiful tragic woman with snakes in her hair of later Greek and Roman depictions. Other antefixes contained Maenad and Silenus heads. But this astounding piece is full of invention and skill, with much of its original polychromy intact.
