the government is so fucked up right now, there's bacteria in the antibacterials

Lolamicin works by targeting a unique Gram-negative transport system. No currently approved antibacterials work in this way, meaning it potentially represents the first of a new class of antibacterials with narrow-spectrum Gram-negative activity and low gastrointestinal

And if folks think it’s a tough situation with antibacterials, wait until they see what it looks like with antifungals!

I've found that one of the best ways to resist attacks on science is to continue doing science. To that end, here's my new preprint studying the differences between type ii topoisomerases, some of the best targets for antibacterials, to help guide the development of new and better antibacterials 🧪
Bacterial type II topoisomerases cleave DNA in a species-specific manner
The type II topoisomerases, gyrase and topoisomerase IV, are essential enzymes in nearly all bacteria and are the targets of fluoroquinolones, which are some of the most widely prescribed broad-spectr...

A new bill looking to control antibacterials in everyday products was recently debated in the House of Lords.
Antibacterials are everywhere: for the sake of our microbiome, we need to control their use

It's amateur stuff to just have contaminated foods.

The pro level move is to contaminate your antibacterials with bacteria.

Our pediatrics department chair had a pet peeve about calling them antibiotics, he forced us to call them "antimicrobials" or "antibacterials".

The Peds ID world is not very big. Some of the true nerds like @empiricgame.bsky.social might know who I'm referring to.

We were so glad when he left.

Exactly. Nor is there a treatment for polio, or for rabies, etc. There is no market for drugs that do not exist, and antivirals and antibacterials are NOT generally high margin products.

The idea that pharma wants to make people sick is just abject bullshit.

1. We use different antibacterials for consumer soaps than we do for plague bacteria. HOWEVER, we DO use the same antibacterials for plague and other common bacterial infections, like streptococcus and pseudomonas. Resistance is a numbers game so the more bacteria , the more likely it is to develop

Curious about new antibacterials in the pipeline? Check out Monday 8am session in B302 and be (among) the first to know.

Went to get checked out by a doctor. FINALLY got proper meds to help my post-shingles arm heal after being passed through doctors giving me medication that wasn't applicable(antibacterials) or meds that were too late to work(antivirals). Those were *not* costly.

Interested the Pico question for severe CAP was set around 5 days. And couldn't commit to avoiding antibacterials in people with proven viruses even in outpatients.

Mother Nature is more efficient than we give credit for - and we get (understandably) thrilled when we find examples. I love this!

Recycle “used” proteins into antibacterials. How brilliant. 🥰🤓
This is absolutely amazing. #Science 🧪

The proteasome, cleaving proteins into antimicrobial peptides. Biology is a amazing

Exactly right in that it (autism) is not connected to either vaccines or antibacterials in any way? That’s fair.

I do the usual cleaning of the bathroom floor and then I do the *real* cleaning of the bathroom floor, with antibacterials lol

Very cool. Guessing they’re naturally resistant to any antibacterials they make as well or do they need immunity mechanisms?

New MIT research tackles one of medicine’s biggest threats — antibiotic resistance. Using synthetic biology and AI, Collins Lab researchers are developing programmable antibacterials to outsmart drug-resistant pathogens. https://ow.ly/u19v50Y4nQ7
