The Romanian portion of the Holocaust killed half the country's 600,000 Jews. No gas chambers; some sporadic massacres. Mostly the Antonescu govt evicted the Jews into abandoned areas of Ukraine with no food. They starved, froze and died of disease. Curious who would argue it wasn't genocide.

Our view of fascism in the US today is skewed by the fact that we view Hitler as the prototypical fascist, despite the fact that he was in many respects atypical. We would have better conversations if we viewed Franco, Ion Antonescu, or Ferenc Szálasi as the comparisons for fascist movements today.

for those of you playing at home, recall that the Nazis were disturbed by the Guard’s brutality to the point where they gave Antonescu the green light to purge the Guard!
the only thing i can think of which compares is the Iron Guard, an Orthodox fascist movement in Romania which was condemned by the Nazis for its antisemitism and which considered damnation in pursuit of a theologically justifiable order to be the highest form of martyrdom.
i keep joking about the GOP being in league with the chaos gods from the warhammer universe but there are so few movements in human history that thought of themselves explicitly as evil that i have to reach a bit. i am not even sure if historical fascism is a good analogue bc of this
