#Appification
It's important to look at market trends that follow similar strategies, LLMs doubling down on hardware costs to inflate costs for IPO (alongside other reasons), IoT investments, appification, SaaS, MOOCs.. all ways to spend money in expensive trendy ways to attract investors & justify higher costs

Hello from England! I got here by borrowing a phone to download an app to get a VISA. I don't like that I needed an app to get here.
The Appification of the World
In order to fly to England, I had to get a VISA. (New policy. Totally sucks. Pretty sure it’s because our country is now run by assholes.) In order to apply for this VISA, I was instructed to download a special app. But my phone was too old to download this app so the instructions were to borrow someone else’s phone and use theirs to apply.

Here’s an article from McSweeney’s that strikes juuuuuust the right tone about private equity, enshittification, and the appification of everything, right on time for Halloween.
I Am the Manager of the Private Equity Firm That Just Acquired the House in Your Neighborhood That Hands Out Full-Size Candy Bars on Halloween
“Finding the full-size candy bar house is one of childhood’s great moments. We would never take that away. We’ve just tweaked it. Every kid still walks away ...

Yeah, I haven't been a fan of the appification and hubification of the internet ever since it started.

probably the appification of technology, if we’re really thinking about it, like the same root cause as people not knowing how to rename a folder or uninstall a program

I'm sort of on the other side of this -- I was initially super pro-smartphone, and pro-AI, until I saw how each was being implemented. I still think the decoherence of appification & the cloud, and the synergy of that with social media, laid a lot of psychological groundwork for where we're at now

My mom tried to order food the other day and I had to remind her "you cannot send a delivery guy through a riot. Your food is delivered by a human being".

It didn't occur to her that burrito taxi has a driver. The appification of microaccess to servant labor was a terrible idea.

I am still curious why this model seems to work for app aggregators like SetApp. At some level I wonder if there will be another round of appification, potentially making a phone or computer Notification Center a news roundup area ... of course that would involve refinements to notifications

#TLDR: the profit model for the gambling industry hasn’t changed in centuries: exploit the desperation of the poor for profit. The house ALWAYS wins. Appification and AI have made it all SO MUCH WORSE.

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story.

For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards.

Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

The appification of parenting is the source of like half of my kid-related stress. I either have to leave the notifications on and deal with the pinging all day long, or turn them off and spend all my time apologizing for missing stuff.
My son is starting preschool on Thursday. So far I have downloaded five apps.

I think you mean expand. Saying you want a contraction feels like you don't understand the core issue, the appification of the Internet.

The appification of everything is so damn annoying.
I am soooo tired of having to download an app for everything.
I went to a Seattle Sounders game tonight. I had to have a Ticketmaster app to download my tickets and then I had to have a Sounders app to actually use them.
I just want to go back to a simple life. I hate it here.

The iPhone was the first step toward social media evilness, the enshittified Internet, and The Appification of Everything.

Smartphones should've remained a bad niche technology. We were fine with Palm Pilots.

<old fart voice>Back In My Day... we'd just disable the CSS.</OFV>

unfortunately in the appification-of-even-webpages-mostly-consisting-of-text, because Javascript adds the content, we often get nothing at all if we block the tiniest thing.

I think we need Dark Magic.

CRT TVs would instantly open on the first live input when you opened them and they had a dedicated source button that was easy...
How has Appification of all appliances made them less usable

I strongly disapprove of the appification of everything. It's mostly just an excuse to tie us into data gathering and ads.

Appification is enshitification. (Cory Doctorow). He also said we're (as users) are not even the product any more. The product is the companies who're forced to use Google's and Apple's ecosystems at a 30% skim.

I only have 18 observations (i've never really taken to it, being a hardcore paper field guide person) but i know so many people who've contributed SO MUCH to it. this feels like a huge betrayal & it just makes me hate the "appification" of everything so much more. i might not wait to delete my acct

To further amend the decadeology above:
2000s: adtech, photoshop, smartphones
2010s: social media, appification, microtargeting
2020s: paywalls, influencer economy, synthetic media

I've been saying for years that Reddit is just the Web circa 2006 (2016 now due to its appification unfortunately). It's replicating forum culture but without the walls between sites.
