I would add that the article — and the underlying survey — don’t discuss the most apples-to-apples substitute for throwing a dinner party: going out to dinner as a group.
This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5).

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

"John" is an H-2A worker harvesting apples in Western NY. "We spend our day climbing up and down ladders, filling up a 30-40lb bag full of apples. Because of the Trump wage cuts we're earning less this year than in the past for the same thing. That isn't fair." #WeFeedYou

like, if gaddafi had declared that all apples are now oranges and that all libyans calling them apples were internal enemies, it’d be covered in the press as a wacky but dangerous move from an unserious and dangerous clown dictator
the president demanding that one of the primary engines of the country’s economy — thousands of companies, trillions of dollars — rename their core products to suit his whim is tinpot dictatorship shit, and the only reason it doesn’t feel like it is because no one is listening to him
