Archivio di Stato in Venice. This is the exit on a wet winter evening.
A darkened courtyard illuminated by a single light. It is paved with large grey stone blocks that are wet from the rain. There is a small archway through which you can see another door. That door leads to a canal.

Things are so bad I joined WhatsApp (still don't have a smartphone though, no). In amongst the serious stuff in our 'at risk' chat are some Very Lovely Things.

For instance, my colleague who works on the Italian Renaissance shared this photo of the Archivio di Stato di Roma, where she currently is:
A photo taken through an archway at the State Archives of Italy. All around are magnificent old buildings with a clear blue sky above.

Modernism at play in the handsome entrance to the Polish State Archive.

The entrance to a building. The frontage of the building is curved, it is grey with symmetrical windows, creating a striking effect.

This is a wonderful thread on archival exteriors. Here’s my contribution: the beautiful City of Boston Archives in West Roxbury. It’s actually lovely inside!

The apocalyptic entrance to the Hungarian National Archives, which my colleague describes as 'unmatched in beauty'. I think you will agree:

A doorway surrounded by green corrugated iron painted green. It appears to be underground. the walls are crumbling and bits of masonry are scattered on the bare concrete wall. It is all very foreboding.

At this point we decided to start writing a history of archival architecture. There would be a full chapter on The National Archives, Kew:

The industrial chic of the Devon Heritage Centre in Sowton, accessed from the bus stop via a series of sprawling empty car parks and familiar to many of us as a venue for giving public talks.

Photo of a road in Britain with a building on one side. It has large windows divided by blue tiles, with a layer of red brick wall at the top. Not that inspiring.

Full marks to the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, in Lisbon, a triumph from the front and the back.

A magnificent white palace with arches, windows, and all the rest. A very large and impressive edifice. The back of the archive in Lisbon, this is very modern, with concrete dividers provided shade to the wall. It looks like an extremely elegant car park.

An easily my favourite, the German Archive for Diaries, Emmendingen. (first and top floor).

I asked, and you can get beer and cheese right outside, yes.

#ArchiveGoals #ArchiveHour #IdealArchive 10/
A gorgeous German building. The ground floor has arched windows and is painted light blue. The first flour has square windows and is painted very pale yellow, flowers tumble from window boxes. The Top floor and roof are both tiled, there are little attic windows with pointed tops. A bell tower crowns the building with a clock on the side. On the square in front are people enjoying food and drink at tables with parasols.

For #ArchiveHour: today I visited Teesside Archives in the Dorman Museum, Middlesbrough, built by steel magnate Sir Arthur Dorman (of Dorman Long) as a memorial to his son George, who died of illness in the South African War. Opened 1904, though the archives moved here only a few years ago. 📜🗃️
