#Aristarchus
Aristarchus, the brightest crater on the Moon visible from Earth.
This is an amazing region, with lots of fascinating features and detail.
Apart from Aristarchus the most conspicuous is the winding Scroters Valley, about 100 miles in total length.

Tonight's Moon is 91.3% lit. Aristarchus, the lunar impact crater, is on the northern west (upper left) area. Probably the brightest formation on the Moon.

Checking the moon tonight, 89% illuminated waxing gibbous phase. Nice crater detail including Tyco near the six o clock and bright Aristarchus (I think) at 9 o clock. Full moon on August 9th.

See the solitary bright crater on the lower left? It's named after Aristarchus of Samos, who proposed that the Earth orbits the sun 1,800 years before Copernicus. An unbelievably insightful idea for its day (sadly ignored).

Image taken tonight by my tiny telescope.

Aristarchus crater has greenish hues, reports Jeremy Hansen from #ArtemisII. And there are a lot of brown hues visible in crater rays. It' amazing hearing the crew describe their impressions in real time. 🧪

The decline began around 145 BC, when Ptolemy VIII, a vicious & self-serving despot, began exiling scholars who were critical of his harsh rule.

The head librarian (Aristarchus) was exiled to Cyprus, triggering a diaspora of other scholars to safer cities around the Mediterranean.

So he'll be using the tenth-century CE Codex Marcianus Graecus 822 (née 454) manuscript in Venice with the 2nd-century BCE Aristarchus scholia notes on the 6th-century BCE Peisistratean recension?

Dope.

Have you ever heard that Copernicus independently rediscovered heliocentrism and wasn’t aware of Aristarchus? Or that ancient Greeks rejected Aristarchus’s heliocentric model because they were unable to observe stellar parallax?

Both are false

Setting the Record Straight: How Copernicus Concealed His Debt to Aristarchus—and Claimed an Intellectual Priority He Knew Wasn’t His
There’s a prevailing myth in the history of science that Copernicus rediscovered heliocentrism independently—and that he had no real connection to Aristarchus, whose own theory was vague, obscure, …

The brightest crater on the moon stands out during the waxing gibbous phase (~89%). The relatively young Aristarchus crater was formed 450 million years ago.
