For today’s #JanuArty theme we have two of my older expressive figures who appear a little #broken. I do a month of anatomy in October sometimes and these were experiments from those.

A watercolor painting profile view of a seated woman in a position with her elbow proped on one knee and the second leg curled underneath her knee. She is turned away from the viewer as her hand obscures her face. Bright yellow, purple, and green colors spike away from her in sharp strings. A watercolor painting of a seated man holding his head in his hands, surrounded by shades of green and flecks of gold in various watercolor techniques.

"City Kids"
Old flam3 fractal.

I grew up surrounded by trees, and that's where I live now too. But I spent a decade living around Seattle, and a big theme in my early art involved thinking about how the identity of a city is shaped and shared by the people who call it home.
This stark fractal design is made up of dark black linework that resembles an ink-pen sketch. The lines make up a series of intersecting pentagram shapes in a messy spiral. From each line, the "ink" appears to be smeared, but the smear is always directed straight up toward the top of the page. The smear is made up of a bunch of densely packed columns of different lengths, giving the impression of a city skyline. There is a round shape in the upper left corner that could be a sun or moon peeking up over the horizon.

An artquilt showing three koi fish swiming lazily, in formation, through stylized lily pads. Green cotton fabric background with metallic gold parentheses shapes printed on it. One fish is gold, one white with red markings, and the third is white with gold, black, and red markings. The lily pads are green circles with swirls or teardrop shapes coming off them. The fish and lily pads are made of tyvek material that has been painted. Metallic silver thread has been used to quilt the lily pads in a spiral design. The fish are quilted using a clamshell design to indicate scales. Echo stitching was used in the background.

A River's Rock-strewn Path 🪨🏞️
#photography
Title: A River's Rock-strewn Path The image showcases a serene, meandering river flowing through a lush, forested landscape. This is the summer flow, a stark contrast to the raging torrent it becomes in the spring due to snowmelt. The riverbed is a mosaic of rocks in various sizes and colors, creating a visually captivating scene. The colors range from the predominant gray of granite or similar riverbed stones, to striking reddish-brown hues possibly from sandstone or iron-rich rocks, and even dark, almost black rocks, potentially basalt or other volcanic formations. Lighter-colored rocks, such as limestone or quartz, add contrast. The water flows smoothly over the rocky bed, creating small ripples and reflections of the surrounding trees. The surrounding foliage is lush and green, with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees creating a dense canopy overhead.

Day 4 #Januarty - Shadows

I stumbled upon this happy scene last fall. I love this photo & framed a print for these folks. When they reached out to thank me, they said that the cat’s name is Lenny, the same as my favorite uncle who recently passed away.

#caturday #photography #cats #synchronicity
A photo of a tabby cat sitting on a cement stair, mid-meow which makes it look as if the cat is smiling for the camera. The scene is very colorful with a bright yellow door and a dark corn flower blue painted brick house and a salmon patio chair. Shadows are being cast from the lattice roof and the chair in beautiful patterns.

A cream colored mushroom with messy gills and a shaggy stem pushes up through leaf litter. The low angle reveals the underside of its cap, and bright sunlight shining through it makes the cap glow a warm apricot color. Below the mushroom are dark brown dead leaves and pale tan dried twigs. Above and beyond the mushroom, vibrant green leaves block out most of a clear blue sky.

Day 3 of #artAdventCalendar: brand new #fractal #art #artAltText
An abstract fractal in warm tones on a black background. A blurry oval cloud of dark tan and burgundy fills the background, with a hazy trapezoidal shape of softly glowing light in the center. From this shape, a streak moves sharply outward and expands into a long narrow leaf shape. The leaf shape is made of layered bands of color in increasingly narrow vertical folds: dark green and yellow on the outside, then hot pink on one side and bright scarlet on the other, then shiny peach on both sides, then sky blue, and finally pale gold in the center. The folds curve towards each other and the pale gold layers start to spiral. It has a shape reminiscent of a vulva. Title: Galaxy. Signed: Belenen 2025.

A brightly lit canopy of trees lines a deeply shaded, wet dirt path leading into the distance. The trees are in full leaf, and the branches look almost heavy with their bounty. The darkness of the path and the deep shading of the base of the trees and bushes makes it all look very mysterious, while the bright sky glimmering through the tops of the trees gives it an exciting, hopeful feel.

They are tiled in a hexagonal pattern with beets and carrot greens at the center, then zucchini pointing out from the center, clusters of five eggplants with their stems pointing toward each other in a lopsided star, then a little arch of tomatoes framed by onions, jalapeños as little arches around the tomatoes, and zucchini pointing side to side under the tomatoes. Next are beets, carrots, and yellow bell peppers, and then the pattern flips and repeats.

A flat trapezoid of aqua glass lies amid sandy, rocky river soil. The sunlight shines through the glass, refracted through the irregular, broken edge more brightly than it reflects off of the top. A thin haze of light brown sand is scattered over the glass, and a single pine needle, still a bright green, lies across it. Next to the glass is a small sprout with just two leaves. The viewing angle is low and so is the angle of the sunlight, nearing sunset.

One of my first photos this year (taken and edited on my phone). #artAltText #art
A closeup of ice coating a thin branch, with silhouetted bare trees and a cloudy, dull sky behind. The ice forms long drips and smaller, rounder drips, completely coating the slim branch above and below. The trees reflect darkly in the drips, contrasting with the sky reflections shining through. Blurry power lines are barely visible passing diagonally through the trees and horizontally mimicking the position of the ice-coated branch. The only color in the shot is the pale grey-blue of the sky.

#artAdventCalendar day 5. A #nature photo that I took in 2017 and am still a little baffled by. Never seen anything like it before or since! #art #artAltText
On a forest floor, thin, separated layers of deeply colored reddish brown wood are draped over a solid fallen log. The layers of wood look almost like deli cuts of meat - their original shape and structure is completely gone and what is left is curled over the log in short, narrow, overlapping strips that flow together as if made of fabric. A shaft of light pierces the canopy and falls directly on the brick-red strips, making them stand out even more against the darker green, brown, and tan of surrounding pine needles, fallen leaves, dead twigs, and grass.

The worlds we’ve seen. ✨ Acrylic paint on canvas, painted with a palette knife, circa 2017 or thereabouts.

Painting by Corinna of a face up close, on a bright yellow background, the face is painted in an abstract style in marks of blue, black, white, & touches of red- the yellow & blue close together give an impression of green. The expression on the face could be seen as distant/far-away, as one in contemplation, &/or in turmoil. What’s seen is hard to un-see. The earrings, & lights within the eyes, could appear as planets in an abstract way.
