Owl made with black charcoal pencil, with black streaks on the crown, a grey large brow, two eyes with black iris, sharp pointy bill, patches of white on the shoulders and wings. Perched on a Pine tree with moss cover from the Coniferous forests of the higher altitude Himalayan moist temperate forest. Pine leaves in the background. Rarely seen in the Himalayan region, one of the most gorgeous owl, Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus), there are only few observations of them from India. Editors suggested I study works of Simon Calburn from the book by Alan Kemp, “The Owls of Southern Africa”. His illustration took him 11 years. Hoping to be that meticulous and good with this book, too. His studies of owls in various stages are brilliant and inspiring. I also picked up the “Owl of the world” by Rob Hume, illustrated by Trevor Boyer, what beautiful paintings and illustrations. Hope to live up to these standards in my own works. Brown-winged Kingfisher (Pelargopsis amauroptera) a warm brown bird with bright red bill perched on branch from the Mangroves of Sundarbans, West Bengal, India. We celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, 2025; here is a jewel from one of India’s most diverse wetlands. Title: Penance_10 Brown-winged Kingfisher (Pelargopsis amauroptera) Acrylic on Canvas Size:8x8 inches Location: Sundarbans, West Bengal, India Duration: 66 Hours April 1st, 2019 Reference: Own Reference Sold, Private Collector During one of my birdwatching trips to eastern of India, stumbled upon this jewel. I was most captivated by their habitat; the groves were so densely vegetated, visibility was minimal. However, so many species not only survive but thrive in such tough conditions. Fishing cat is one of them, nocturnal and shy. For this kingfisher, though their bill and frontal body parts are a big giveaway, they shine like a lamp in the thick dark habitat. Here seen sitting in the branch early morning waiting for his next snack, shadows created by the canopy create enough shade for the school of fishes to gather. This provides ample opportunity for the King to hunt. Though early morning, the light was not enough to get my focus right. Had to use one of my torches to light the bird, which enabled my camera to focus, hence the two sources of light on the subject. Done my possible best to depict this magical habitat!

Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) a bird with a black shiny crown, white eye ring, red eyes and black iris. White cheek, throat and wings with shades of greys. Black bill with a highlight of white at the tip of the upper mandible. Leaves in the foreground with black stripes like patterns with white highlights. Blurr background with black fading patterns. Made few grey toned papers few months back. The process making my own grey toned paper was interesting and a good learning experience. One can make cool greys or warm greys, depending on one's own preference. I get to watch these birds in the middle of the city and at one of the common visited parks in Bangalore. Cubbon Park is centrally located and one of the most visited park how these birds have adapted to urbanization is amazing. Title: Night Heron Study! From my Woodpeckers of Karnataka series. Yellow-crowned woodpecker Male from Thurahalli Forest, Bangalore. Commonly seen in dry, shrub lands and deciduous habitat. Have sighted them at many locations during my visits to national parks. However, was a pleasant surprise to spot them at 20 kilometers distance from my Bangalore. Thurahalli forest is one of the last surviving forests in Bangalore, with a great diversity of wildlife ranging from black naped hares, Indian eagle owls and rock agamas. Their habitat supports varied species, was lucky to spot this Yellow-crowned woodpecker on cactus in the open. Entry to Thurahalli forest requires permission from the forest department these days, which is a welcome step forward to protect the remaining lung spaces in the city.
