chock full of really remarkable compositions - a hollow, emptied out city stuck in a terrible stasis. The lie of progress gives way to an existential inertia

Youssef Chebbi's ASHKAL is a beguiling Tunisian film dancing around a bonfire of burning genres. It's political cinema woven with horror, a police procedural falling into oneiric doom. I wrote about this nightmare for The Film Experience.
