2.) AssemblyLoadContext based plug-in solution. Project lists which plugins it relies on, which are loaded at runtime.

Hot reloading similar to Unity - serialize the world, tear it down, load new assemblies, & deserialize with new assemblies

I guess as long as the editor knows where the core csproj is, it can kick off builds & load the output DLL into an AssemblyLoadContext so it can be unloaded later.

In such case it can also do things like serialize loaded assets in memory, unload them, load new assembly, then reload those assets

Unload is not a magic trick. Jordan Rowles shares a pragmatic recipe for collectible ALCs, shadow copy, and metadata-only discovery so your plugins update cleanly.

This week I've been learning about AssemblyLoadContext to solve a tricky dependency issue in the Elastic Distribution of OpenTelemetry (EDOT) for #dotnet. I finally have a POC working that avoids dependency conflicts for profiler-based use cases. It's not perfect but still it's good progress!

Today in #dotnet code generation, had to load and then unload an assembly so I could build it and then reload it. Worked as expected until I turned on the debugger, which apparently doesn't honor the AssemblyLoadContext unload call. Not sure if Rider's fault or if VS would do the same.
