I think all these options would have to be, from “lost” eastern (Valyrian) technology or privileged Asshaii knowledge, it would mean Mel provided the sword and knows it’s just an instrument to manipulate the wielder, and the appearance characteristic would completely mystify regular people…

My favourite tease in TWOIAF is the colour coded Asshaii dragon emperors with the figures from Dany's AGOT dream. It's also interesting that the beginning of the end of the Asshaii civilisation (and perhaps the long night itself)was a younger brother usurping his sisters throne.
