A gigantic ship, a sexual joke, and novelty baked goods. All three, I suppose, are perfectly in keeping with the spirit of Athenaeus!

She was known for writing riddles, although only three of her riddles survive. One was well-known in antiquity, quoted by Aristotle, as well as by Plutarch, Demetrius of Phalernum, and Athenaeus; one survives in quotation by an anonymous philosopher; and the third survives in Plutarch's Moralia.

There are only three times Athenaeus uses the Greek word embolos in reference to a naval ram:

1. The seven rams of the tessarakonteres (which, in my opinion, is as ridiculous as the ship itself).

Lords of the Dance: it was considered customary for Macedonian kings to perform dances during banquets, equipped in full armor or entirely naked. It is believed to be religious or ceremonial, but such “war dances” were quite common throughout Greece.

I have described myself as the author of everything I've published to this point, but I'd like to emulate Athenaeus in referring to myself as the father of my next book (he does this literally: ὁ τῆς βίβλου πατήρ).

Just found that Philip II and Alexander the Great liked apples (Dorotheos BNJ 145 F1: philomêloi). Chares of Myt. says when Alex found fine apples in Babylonia, he organized a jocular apple-fight from boats (125 F 9). In 331 or in 324 ? Of course, all this in Athenaeus; I'd never heard of it. 1/

3. A prayer to ?Demeter: "πλειστον ουλον ουλον ιει, ιουλον ιει", "Send abundant barley-sheaves, barley-sheaves, send barley-sheaves" (Athenaeus 618e). Sadly, we don't know what ουλος meant. Some Greeks thought it meant "barley-sheaf", but it perhaps originally related to wool.

So sesame seeds gives us oil, which was used in ancient Mesopotamia..And then in Greece, for cakes and desserts...A famous one called gastris described by Athenaeus by Chryssipus of Tyana..."mixing the nuts knead with boiled honey, adding plenty of pepper."

Sounds like you have a 21st century Philoxenus on your hands. In The Deipnosophistae, Athenaeus writes of Philoxenus who went around the city followed by slaves carrying oil, wine, fish sauce (garos/garum), and vinegar.
