I found this a deeply mesmerising film; slow cinema of the best kind.
Made in 1971, it almost silently follows César Newashish, a 67yo Atikamekw man, as he makes a canoe using only a forest’s materials: birchbark, cedar splints, spruce, roots & gum.

Teepees were recently set up to remind loggers they’re entering Atikamekw ancestral territory in Quebec.

APTN News spoke with Dave Petiquay, a guardian of the territory who has taken part in multiple blockades in Wemotaci in recent years.

The Quebec Court of Appeal is authorizing a class-action for forced sterilization of multiple Atikamekw women in Joliette, Quebec.

Previously, the class-action was just against three physicians, but now includes a regional health authority.

I love that the CBC olympics coverage has so many Indigenous language options! Inuktitut hockey coverage has been going the whole time, but today also had Innu, Cree and Atikamekw language events!
