Trajan, Marcus Aurelius. Augustan propaganda was all about how Augustus was a pater patriae, princeps and primus inter pares.

I mean, under Augustan marriage legislation with three you're able to inherit from anyone not just people who are cognates to the seventh degree, so that's a plus?

There will be a restoration. There will come a flowering of dignified, stately, grown-up English prose that will make the Augustan Age look like a joss whedon script. I hope my daughter lives to see it

For this #MosaicMonday we look up into the spectacular presbytery vault of San Vitale in #Ravenna. To me, the Ravenna #mosaics are an astonishing collection, the last magnificent product of late antiquity. But whose empire does this shimmering C6 CE ceiling actually represent? #AncientBluesky 🏺

Wait wait wait. So Augustus launches this campaign to suppress the cult of Isis, the "queen of heaven," a mother deity, while the main villain in Virgil's Augustan epic is Juno, the "queen of the gods," *the* mother deity.

Thinking about how the guy they cast as Agrippa looks like Samwise Gamgee, and how this is honestly not a terrible analogy for his role in the Augustan regime

This extended quest into Augustan culture is convincing me even more that figural interpretation was a deeply Hellenistic, historically contingent cultural artifact adopted by the early church. It was not *the* way to read scripture, but a thoroughly culturally contextual enterprise.

It’s taken 220 pages to get to this moment. And yet, having this much background on all the values of the Augustan regime *before* he tackles the poetry of Virgil, Horace, and Ovid is powerful.

The ‘Tellus’ panel from the Ara Pacis is one of the most striking pieces of relief work from the Augustan era. The central divine figure has a layered iconography that has led to a variety of theories as to her identity including Ceres and Roma.

Although it is Augustan in origin, the Piazzale delle Corporazioni in #OstiaAntica was enlarged and the buildings subdivided to house local and foreign shipowner’s and merchant’s collegia or guilds. The black and white mosaics date from the mid 2nd C AD.

In 2005 in Spello, it was accidentally unearthed a huge Roman Villa of 500 mq. The whole Villa was built in two phases: the first in the Augustan Era, and the second in the high-Imperial Era. The 20 rooms are the core of the villa. Each room floor has got a mosaic showing different subjects.
