I mean, under Augustan marriage legislation with three you're able to inherit from anyone not just people who are cognates to the seventh degree, so that's a plus?

Hell, if you buy Augustan era propaganda, Romans are descended from Turkish immigrants anyway

For those of us who use the Augustan calendar, there's still time.

Ok, Aeneid discourse time because the statement below is correct, but also, I think, significantly incomplete in ways that understate how good Vergil is as an author (he is very good).

Aeneas is supposed to be a self-righteous prig because Vergil is deeply ambivalent about the Augustan project.
Virgil wrote FanFic.

And while parts of his epic are very good, Aeneas himself comes across as a self-righteous prig.

Kicked off this year's teaching with the first lecture of my new course on heritage in Rome, plus seminars featuring this fabulous interactive map of the Augustan city: www.digitalaugustanrome.org

Trajan, Marcus Aurelius. Augustan propaganda was all about how Augustus was a pater patriae, princeps and primus inter pares.

Virgil stopping each book of the Aeneid for some sudden Augustan propaganda was just his ancient version of ad breaks

Living in Augustan Rome except without an Augustus.
Conservatives can't devise a policy that only helps married White people, so they never actually do it. It was the same problem with marriage promotion since the 1990s (same think tanks, same speeches, same lack of real policy.) If you want policy ideas, check Germany circa 1937.

And Vergil produces a poem that is brilliantly ambiguous: it lays on Augustan propaganda thick - at points so thick as to verge on satire - while presenting a deeply ambivalent view of the protagonist and even of Rome's destiny.

This is a poem where the Carthaginian has the right of it!
September 27, 2025 at 4:43 AM
And he's writing that ambiguous, conflicted self-reflection in a vehicle that *also* has to double as Augustan propaganda if Vergil wants to remain, y'know, alive.

(Livy seems to have a similar problem; lot of fratricide and rape in Livy bk 1, huh? I wonder why, what he's saying about Rome...)

Burlesquing the Augustan era’s fixation on classical tradition, John Gay's Trivia: or, the Art of Walking the Streets of London (1716) renders practical advice for perambulating the capital into oftentimes absurd, hexametric verse: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/gay-trivia

The numbers 1-16 may be significant: Augustan currency was partially binary, and the "as" (the common "spending" coin you'd use to e.g. buy a drink or a bite to eat) was 1/16th of a denarius. The numbers on the tokens may just represent a redemption rate in ases.
