The rain continues through today. Evacuations have been ordered along rivers north of Austin, including the town of Georgetown.

Georgetown is the town that famously went all in on renewable energy under a republican mayor more than a decade ago. www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncn...

Steven Pinker signed this crap.

So did academics at Princeton, MIT, Harvard, Brown, Georgetown, a number of respected state schools, and both of my alma maters — UT-Austin and Northwestern.

What are the chances any of the signatories did the “free speech” dance for pro-Palestine academics?
There’s a petition signed by more than one hundred academics (& counting!) in support of Nathan Cofnas—the racist who instigated the pile on that led to J. Arday’s death—because he lost his postdoc. Apparently there’s nothing a white man can do that deserves consequences.

Ok, I could do this story. Melania isn't even showing *in Austin,* just at small theaters in Bastrop and Georgetown (both an hourish away). One showing has sold 4 tickets and the other 2! I mean, I went to Minneapolis for a story but is it worth it to drive to Georgetown?
I don't know if this is a good story here in Austin but someone should post up at a theater showing Melania THE MOVIE in wealthy red suburb and interview anyone, ANYONE who shows up.

The structural problem in the TX Democratic Party is that Houston is a giant blackhole that contributes fuck all to the statewide bench. The whole statewide bench (such as one even exists) is DFW or Austin/Georgetown/Round Rock.

If you are in WILLIAMSON COUNTY (north of Austin):

The San Gabriel has flooded and the Georgetown Animal Shelter has been evacuated to the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter. They need people to drop by and pick up animals to foster for a couple of days.

"Today we mark 14 years since Austin Tice — a Georgetown University alumnus, award-winning freelance journalist, and U.S. Marine Corps veteran — was detained at a checkpoint near Damascus, Syria." - National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. www.press.org/newsroom/nation...
National Press Club continues to call for Austin Tice’s release on 14th anniversary of his captivity
Photojournalist Austin Tice was detained at a checkpoint near Damascus, Syria, on August 14, 2012. WASHINGTON, D.C., August 14, 2026 – National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. released the following statement today:  “Today we mark 14 years since Austin Tice — a Georgetown University alumnus, award-winning freelance journalist, and U.S. Marine Corps veteran — was detained at a checkpoint near Damascus, Syria, on August 14, 2012. He remains today the longest detained American journalist overseas.  Austin is not forgotten. We urge President Trump to make freeing Austin a top priority. The Trump administration’s efforts to release American hostages held abroad will not be complete until Austin is safely returned to his family.  Since Austin’s detention, Democratic and Republican administrations have worked hard to secure the release of American journalists unjustly detained. In the past few years alone, Evan Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmacheva, Shelly Kittleson, and others have come home thanks to the sustained efforts of press freedom advocates including the National Press Club, families, passionate citizens, and U.S. State Department officials.  Securing the safe release of American journalists is bipartisan and demonstrates to American journalists that they have the backing of their country when they are targeted, kidnapped, or imprisoned for doing their jobs.   And yet, Austin is still missing. His family and friends have lived in uncertainty each day of the past 14 years and deserve to know that the U.S. government remains dedicated to his freedom. It must do everything in its power to bring him home.”   The National Press Club has advocated for Tice’s release since the earliest days of his captivity and honored him with its highest press freedom award — the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award — in 2015. About The National Press Club Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world’s leading professional organization for journalists and a leading voice for press freedom in the U.S. and worldwide.
