Hiiiii, feel free to keep deaf people out of this! So sick of the condescension disguised as faux concern about how disabled people "need" AI. We don't. Autocaptions are almost always very bad, and then people like you use their existence to justify taking away actual accommodations that work.

I always use YouTube autocaptions as an example when I'm explaining the error rate of AI to people. Do you want that same error rate when it comes to stuff like your medical records? This has been very illuminating for a lot of folks.
Believing ai is like believing the subtitles that are auto generating speech to text at a concert or live event

Colleague just called me on Teams to say "someone suggested we use autocaptions in our next big webinar instead of an ASL interpreter, and I don't know the details but that didn't sound right, so I'm using my phone-a-friend."

Deshittification update: today 90% of what I did was tell people versions of "I'm not the right person/my org is not the right org to answer your question, but here is a *very detailed* rundown of where you can ask, the specific person to talk to, and pertinent things to mention when you reach out."
I'm going to keep posting deshittification updates because they make me feel better - hopefully other people will do likewise and feel better too? Anyway, today I was told by multiple people that my "calming voice" made a potentially difficult meeting better. I'll take it!
