If you know what you’re doing letting them crawl onto you like in this photo instead of picking them up from above is generally safe! But yeah it’s definitely something to be super careful about

(Example with Automeris zugana)

So please never ever pick these up like I did BUT this guy was crossing a road and I didn't want him to get hit so I had to make a rescue maneuver, there's plenty of sassafras and willow if he's not ready to cocoon but at least he's safe here.

Io moth caterpillar. I think this one is looking for a place to pupate because they eat tree leaves and it's checking out the Standing Cypress. The spines are venomous. #caterpillars #insects 🌱 #gardening #lepidoptera

#WhatsEatingYourPlants? An Io Moth caterpillar (Automeris io) was on my blueberries. It's beautiful, but don't touch.
#PlantMoreNatives & use no landscape pesticides (including lawn chemicals) to invite more caterpillars to your yard for the birds.

Io Moth (Automeris io) - sitting on a sassafras leaf, a common host plant.

I am immensely proud of my postdoc, Dr. Chelsea Skojec, for publishing this work on Automeris moths and mimicry of owl faces: doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

Okay, so cowkini and leopard print are well-known. What other animals should get their own distinctive swimwear and lingerie pattern?

My vote goes to the Io moth, even though it is way too niche to catch on. Yes the eye spots would go where you'd expect.

My daughter spotted an io moth caterpillar (Automeris io) on the back of my pant leg as we hiked along a trail in the Pinery Provincial Park. It was a good thing we didn't touch it. The spines contain venom that can cause intense burning pain and persistent swelling. She managed to remove it safely.

Bertie didn't make it through the night, but she was perfect while she was here.

(Automeris io, or maybe belti, from the family Saturniidae. The deer-eyed or ox-eyed moth.)

Say hello to my little #BugFriend, Bertie the Deer-Eyed Moth (Automeris io, from the family Saturniidae). Last night in the dark I thought she was a black witch moth, but the distinctive grumpy downturned face showed up at dawn. This girl needs coffee to greet the day! 😂 #Nature
