it's interesting that both Western *and* Chinese culture developed a deep aversion to the idea of human sacrifice (and I believe India too?).
I think plenty of executions in medieval and early modern Europe would be classified as human sacrifice by a semi-ignorant outside observer, in other words, someone who hasn't been marinated in that society's self-justifications for those executions.

a thought i’ll put out there: it is not the ideological moderation that is the electoral problem, it is that selecting for candidates who chase popular issue positions is necessarily selecting for candidates who exude the kind of focused-group affect that voters genuinely hate
