The Australian government has announced a six-week national awareness campaign across television, radio, and social media to improve public knowledge about the H5 bird flu crisis. The campaign, titled 'Bird flu. Know what to do,' comes as the number of confirmed H5 bird flu outbreaks has reached 652 nationwide, with over 51,000 calls to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline. Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins emphasized the importance of public awareness, stating that Australians need to know what to do if they encounter dead birds or if pets interact with them. She confirmed there is no evidence of bird flu infections in Australia's poultry or agriculture systems, and the risk to human health remains low. However, Minister Collins warned that preparedness is crucial, citing the consequences faced by other nations dealing with outbreaks. The government is investing over $270 million to safeguard Australia against the H5 bird flu, highlighting the strength of Australia's biosecurity system in detecting and monitoring the virus from its initial arrival. South Australia (319 outbreaks) and Victoria (208) account for the majority of cases, followed by NSW (67), Tasmania (45), Western Australia (10), Queensland (1), and Jervis Bay and other territories (1). A $2 million vaccination program for native birds has reached nearly 10,000 birds, including species such as WA's Carnaby, Baudin, and Forest Red-tailed black cockatoos, and Victoria's little penguins. Minister Collins noted that bird vaccinations, like human vaccines, require two doses and do not last indefinitely. The campaign aims to provide Western Australians with practical information on protecting pets, backyard poultry, and managing wildlife impacts, with over 5,000 reports to the hotline aiding monitoring efforts. The government urges the public to avoid handling sick or dead birds or marine mammals, instead recording and reporting them via the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
