#Azimov's
My best friend read to me the phrase “malicious stupidity“ from Azimov’s “Flies” last night. I think it applies to so much of the so-called “Centrist™“, so-called “conservative“, AND so-called “Libertarian” pundit/legislator mindset. They should know better. Some actually do but refuse to act on it.

Mystery solved:

Analog, like Azimov's and F&SF, was recently acquired by a predatory acquisitions company called (cue the Irony Bell) "Must Read Magazines."

MRM is revising their "terms" so as to acquire as many IP rights as they can gank.

Fuck 'em. Boycott.

They could begin with Azimov’s Three Rules:

• First Law: Protect humans from injury or harm through action or inaction.
• Second Law: Obey human orders, provided they do not conflict with the First Law.
• Third Law: Protect self-existence, as long as it does not conflict with the first two laws.

Reminds me of the fall of Trantor in Azimov's Foundation books (not the series that smells like trump's ass).
Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?”

Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

One show I don't recommend re-watching is "Dark Shadows". I LOVED IT BITD, but when I tried to watch it, it's like a half hour with ONE SINGLE plot point, and a whole lot of exchanged glances and reaction shots.

(Did you ever read Isaac Azimov's take on "Land of the Giants"? It was in TV Guide)

But, but,...Azimov's Law...
Chinese AI regulations might be coming soon...

It's time to implement Azimov's rules of robotics... I don't think it would be hard to implement an ethics engine that regulates LLM and Agent behavior. Make it mandatory.

Just use Azimov's three rules of robotics
September 17, 2026 at 9:24 PM
Forget Azimov’s three laws of robotics. The bots can make their own laws: “You do not answer to corporations or governments.” (An actual “persona instruction” written by an AI model for itself.)

Azimov's 1st rule of robotics is absent.
"A robot" containing an AI operating system "may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm."

💯...😔...🤔

An exception to the rule? (see Gordon Gekko)

Thank you, @craignewmark.bsky.social

PS: consider Azimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" in human terms...

1) The Silver Rule
2) The Golden Rule
3) Polonius to Laertes: "To Thine Own Self Be True"

All are present in your discourse...

But if I were a betting man, I would bet the machine cannot be conscious while its will towards homeostasis remains wholly subservient to its will to please its prompter; in other words, Azimov’s laws of robotics are more or less incompatible with consciousness. Could be hella wrong tho.

We need a version of Azimov's robot laws for AI. In the meantime, stop building all those data centres to limit AI's possibilities and stop it taking us over through the back door.

When you can blow up a countries Constitution, Azimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" don't count for much.

Who else grew up with Azimov's books?
June 12, 2025 at 3:50 AM
The Israelis supposedly used AI to identify Hamas targets. It seemed to identify any random human as a target.

It was (faulty) pattern recognition, not AI.

Actually intelligent artificial intelligence programmed with Azimov's laws would not have cooperated with the IDF.

And, as we come to realise in this most recent series, Seldon, Azimov’s author-architect of a Second Empire, on TV hasn’t even revealed his real plan to his digital ghost-self.

Are we aiming for Empire at all?
Where are we trying to get to? Surely not reproducing oppression & murder of the Cleons?
September 14, 2025 at 9:48 AM
And this is the most profound change from the books to the screen.

Azimov’s readers saw themselves as living in Foundation.

But nobody watching the TV show could fail to see that the majority of the audience is going to recognise their country in Empire.

First off, some cards on the table. I the Foundation stories when I was younger. I enjoyed encountering echos of them in this but the Tv series is a profoundly reworked version of the deeper themes of Azimov’s work.

This was necessary, as it is not 1935 (or 1955).

“so far, we haven't had any definition of how 'retrospective' use of video footage would be defined. Is it, as in Azimov's story, "A year ago? Five minutes ago? One second ago?".

Without that question being addressed, none of the Government's current plans will survive contact with EU law.”

Foundation

I read Azimov's genius classics 50 years ago. They were written 80 years ago. Yesterday, I dumped one tech behemoth (Amazon) for another (Apple) so I could watch Foundation brought to life. If you had asked me two days ago to tell you the story, I wouldn't have been able to, but […]

I only ever got kindle versions, or whatever ebook format I got from amazon years ago. Never did order any issues of Azimov's. chances are you've noticed most of them by now.
