4. června 1942 se americká základna Dutch Harbor na aleutském ostrově Umnak stala cílem náletu 31 japonských letadel operujících z letadlových lodí Rjúdžó a Džúnjó. Jednalo se 20 bombardérů Aiči D3A a Nakadžima B5N, které eskortovalo 11 stíhaček Micubiši A6M Zero.

The wreckage of a Japanese Nakajima B5N ‘Kate’ from the carrier Kaga is salvaged off Kuahua in Pearl Harbor. During the attack of 7th December, the warhead of its torpedo was detonated by anti-aircraft fire.

IJN Nakajima B5N torpedo bombers attacking USN ships at the Battle of Santa Cruz, 26-Oct-1942. The B5N was the main carrier based torpedo bomber of the Japanese Navy during WW2.

The ship visible on the left is the battleship USS South Dakota.

The B5N2s were equipped with 60kg bombs instead of torpedoes. Sporadic low-level attacks were made by the B5N2s, scoring two hits on the CL Birmingham. In between these hits, a G4M1 managed to score a hit with a torpedo. The ship survived and would rejoin the fleet after repairs in Feb 1944.

*adjusts glasses* well, ackshully, Mitsubishi only built the A6M *fighter* but the Pearl Harbor *bombers* were the Aichi D3A “Val” dive bomber and Nakajima B5N “Kate” torpedo bomber.

The corporate successor to Aichi is Nissan. The corporate successor to Nakajima is Subaru.

#Lexington was disabled by Aichi D3A Type 99 dive-bombers and Nakajima B5N Type 97 torpedo-bombers launched from #Zuikaku and #Shōkaku at the Battle of the Coral Sea. Abandoned and on fire, she was scuttled by #USSPhelps. Lady Lex was the first U.S. fleet carrier lost in the #SWW. #IJN #NavalHistory

Sans grande surprise le Zéro est pratiquement le seul avion japonais cité, sauf une voix pour le Nakajima B5N "Kate".
Plus étonnante est l'absence totale de voix pour le Hellcat.
Enfin, pas une voix, pas une seule pour un avion italien !

Harvey argues the A6M2 and Ki-43 "diverted attention" from the rest of Japanese aviation, which "with one exception were quite mediocre." This is laughably ignorant. There were mediocre types, but c'mon. I don't have the character/photo limit to list the types that blow up Harvey's claim.
B5N1s of Kasumigaura Kokutai in 1939-40. The B5N was an outstanding carrier torpedo bomber when it was introduced, and was still an excellent example by December 1941 despite the IJNAS expecting its replacement imminently. The Ki-15/C5M was a wonder when it was introduced, and went on to hold the flight time record for its trip from Tokyo to London in 1937. It was an unsung workhorse during the initial air campaigns, lending useful navigational assistance and eyes to Japanese naval air power in particular. The Ki-46 was one of the finest high altitude, high speed reconnaissance aircraft in the world at the time of its introduction. It was very difficult to intercept due to its performance, particularly early in the war, and with upgrades remained relevant to the surrender. The Ki-67 was just one example of a late war Japanese aircraft with exceptional performance, but never got to fully prove itself given the ruinous operational and strategic situation by 1944.
