Barb Harris, who passed away at 91, was a trailblazer in field hockey in British Columbia and Canada. Born in Burnaby in 1935, she began playing the sport at University of British Columbia after attending her first practice. Her determination led to a successful career as both an athlete and administrator. Harris represented Canada in international tournaments, including the 1959 Women’s Field Hockey World Cup in Amsterdam, where her team faced challenges but showcased resilience. After retiring from play, she became a key organizer for major events like the 1973 Canada Summer Games and the 1979 Women’s World Field Hockey Championship. Her contributions extended beyond sports, including founding the 79ers Club to support tournaments and donating significantly to her alma mater’s field hockey program. Harris was inducted into multiple halls of fame and is remembered for her philanthropy, including supporting research at B.C. Children’s Hospital and establishing the Gayle Harris Memorial Education Fund. Her legacy lives on through the communities she impacted and the sport she helped elevate.
