At BCON26—a three‑day conference attended by 700+ people from more than 50 countries—Blender HQ speakers ran through shader migration and a shared PBR model, platform ports and demo builds, and developer talks on refactoring, compositor work, animation and physics nodes.
Blender shifts to Blender Shading Language and previews OpenPBR; Android port demos shown at BCON26
## Shader pipeline: BSL migration, a custom preprocessor, and OpenPBR status Speakers described Blender’s move to a custom Blender Shading Language (BSL) as a response to shader fragmentation, code duplication, and slow runtime compilation across graphics APIs, and presented architectural evolution of the shader pipeline. A custom, lightning‑fast preprocessor was shown as a solution that addressed performance pitfalls tied to vendor shader compilers. Separately, OpenPBR was presented as an upcoming surface shading model intended to keep appearance consistent across applications, with the talk covering implemented features and future plans. ## Platforms and design: Android port demos and a Blender Design System Jonas Holzman walked through the journey of porting Blender to Android, showing several demos and noting that a demo build is available for download and testing. Design leads Dalai Felinto and Pablo Vazquez introduced the Blender Design System built in Penpot and described Blender Extensions that improve prototyping workflows, showcasing projects from 2025 and 2026. The presentations also emphasized that development of these tools requires dedicated design and development resources. ## Engineering highlights: refactoring, compositor, animation, physics nodes and color science Bastien Montagne framed refactoring as a way to raise awareness of code and architecture quality, reviewing principles, goals and common pitfalls; this was illustrated with a real‑life ID management refactoring example spanning over a decade. Habib Gahbiche covered the compositor’s roadmap, design approaches, and new features, including lessons from Blender Studio artists and the community. The Animation & Rigging team presented module progress and plans, including work on introducing animation layers to Actions. Simon Thommes demonstrated Blender’s brand‑new physics nodes and how to build and control custom simulations, while Nathan Vegdahl’s talk on color science—presented as a foundations primer—was rated the best talk by attendees. ## Sources * code.blender.org

BCON26 drew visitors from more than 50 countries for three days of talks, screenings and events at Felix Meritis.
Blender Conference 2026 draws more than 700 attendees to Amsterdam
More than 700 people from over 50 countries attended Blender Conference 2026 in Amsterdam. The three-day program featured 126 speakers, four stages and more than 100 hours of talks and events. Blender marked two decades of Open Movies with an installation built from all seventeen films. Each movie appeared frame by frame on a massive pillar. Visitors could take a frame home and scan its QR code to open that exact moment in the film. The anniversary program also included a screening at De Balie attended by several directors and artists who worked on the films. Blender reported that satisfaction with the program remained “extremely high” and rose slightly from last year. Attendees praised the variety, quality and educational value of the talks, although some said the packed schedule made it difficult to see every session live. More than 60% of survey respondents attended as part of their jobs, and 79% said they plan to return next year. Recordings are available through the BCON26 playlists on PeerTube and YouTube. ## Sources * blender.org

I really like this new approach: Node graphs can be converted to code and vice versa, so you can have both and edit in whatever is more appropriate for the moment: nodes for tweaking and fast interaction, code for diffs and building large, maintainable libraries. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFGE...
