In the wayback days, before Twitter was turned into an almost exclusively dumpster fire place, I tried to encourage school libraries to also have LFLs … great community-building, fun #makerspace project with kids…

The author/illustrator panel I went to was fun, inciteful; some of my notes…
Great desktop with the 2025BCTL a conference pamphlet on it that features a cartoony unicorn sitting on top of a pile of books with the title libraries are magical. Beside at our various sticky notes, I recorded some thoughts on from the panel. The sticky notes feature self portraits and various weird and wonderful sketchy styles with word bubbles coming from my mouth with the thoughts I wanted to record. Example word bubbles: One of them says check out some books by Rachelle Delaney, Leah Hong, and Stephanie Ellen Sy that I don’t know. Also, some more by Tanya Lloyd Kyi. Talking about finding or preserving joy through creating stories and tough times… Adding humor… Or hidden pictures in books. Nobody has agency over your imagination. Idea of stories as a guide to learning to find agency, to build community … Stories as ways to open up conversations based on what readers/listeners think of the situations, or behaviors, or attitudes of the characters

Gr 5 Social Studies presentations from Yukon Dan today…gold panning and Gold Rush learning in the library (it’s become an annual thing).

(Psssttt, #BCTLA folks, he has room for four more schools on a Vancouver Island tour early June.)

It shows multiple hands, gripping black plastic gold pans filled with mixed gravel as they are in the process of swishing water through it to try and find the gold flakes within. So the kids get to simulate what it was like to actually pan for gold in a river. Dry gold pans with gravel and several small rocks with various minerals in them, and some eye loops and magnifier flashlight to get an up close look at the materials. So, there is this station, then a worksheet station to try and fill in information provided during his info session, and the actual gold panning station, plus a quick presentation about all kinds of gold materials in a display case and display table set up. A close-up of one case within the display table that has all kinds of things made with gold or related to gold mining. This case has some of Yukon Dan’s meals from gold panning competitions plus things that have gold on them are made with gold. As well as some different golden nuggets that he has found while panning.
