I’ve always liked this strange thin Tokyo style bldn on King West

In 2019 also visited his Bodegas Marqués de Riscal winery bldn in Rioja Spain.

This vaguely moorish apt bldn at king & Dunn is such a Detroit bldn. So many of these there. So few here - could use a few 1000 more (Toronto councils & elites have never liked apts)

The Cdn embassy in Tokyo is epic in scope. Such grandness + materials + size in a compact city. Bungalowish bldns for staff. A real moment: Japan’s 80s boom but also a Cdn bigness vs cheapness. An internationalism too. Bring it back. It’s our only way around the USA. Pics from Oct 2023 walking by.

I miss wandering The Bay. Department stores were good. Damn private equity.

This is where Franklin the Turtle is made.

The abandoned Scientology bldn. The curious taping of all the windows. If I was a billionaire I’d buy & refurbish, esp keeping those 👌🏼 windows (making them efficient?).
My house wld be top 2 floors.
Main floor would be a nightclub called SCIENCE.
Floors 2-6 home to my crisis communications team.

Hudson Bay 5th floor view of confederation life bldn 1892. One of the most unsung bldns downtown imho, of this era. Old city hall gets this period attention.

Appears the US consulate’s flag is at half staff. For democracy?

Walked by 21 McGill today. Tucked off of Yonge. Fun fact in the 70s this was the McGill Club or 21 McGill. A professional woman’s club. Learned this reading Barbara Amiel’s bananas memoir. It’s a handsome bldn. Wish we had more. digitalarchive.tpl.ca/objects/2321...

Now a ghost kitchen this was legendary INDUSTRY nightclub 25+ years ago. House techno queer not queer + other subcultures. Quintessential 1990s kind of club I miss them.

Did a guest lecture today mostly to visit this bldn. 🥲

They (meaning me) have always called this one the “Laptop Bldn” circa 2006 style chonky laptop.

Isabella St. A perfectly good apt bldn empty, people displaced & being demolished all because so much of Toronto is off limits & forced here. Aka house neighbourhoods. Such a shame. Such waste. And the shame of every elected official here. Shame of Ford for not pushing reforms. All the same.

This is a loss for Detroit. Ford also destroyed their Oakville HQ admin bldn up here 20/25 years ago, an echo of the Dearborn bldn. Ford built Oakville Assemply mid-1950s so the same spirit was in the air (can't find a pic of old bldn, not even earliest streetview)
Since @midwestmodern.bsky.social doesn't post here very often, bringing this one over from The Other Place.

This demolition will really hurt. Ford HQ was a fixed point in my mental map of Metro Detroit my whole life.

If I moved to Calgary this would be my house (the abandoned school board bldn).

What ho, po mo?

The new bldn on Asquith & Yonge echoed the classic (1977) windows of the reference library across the street. What a nice detail.

It’s nice to walk thru the civil engineering bldn at U of T to see the large shrine where they honour brutalism.

My favourite hotel on earth (at least in Montreal). It is really a brutalist low rise motor hotel high a top of a concrete plinth. It remains gorgeous & perfect 60 years later. Heaven.

Odd fact: this was the Holt Renfrew fur coat cold storage bldn on Bloor West. (Photo from Wed)

The Cdn embassy in Berlin by Toronto’s KPMB is very nice. Went inside in 2011, usual a+ office but has 2 Main Street fronts.
