Halfway Down by A. A. Milne
Halfway down the stairs is a stair where i sit. there isn't any other stair quite like it. i'm not at the bottom, i'm not at the top; so this is the stair where I always stop. A humorous, relatable poem about putting off an anxiety-inducing phone call for weeks, only to discover it takes four minutes. A reminder that even the smallest acts of courage deserve to be celebrated. The Phone Call I’ve been meaning to make that call for almost three weeks now. Every morning I tell myself today’s the day. Then I find something else to do. The dishes. The laundry. Once, I cleaned behind the refrigerator. Today I finally dialed the number. My hands shook a little. My voice sounded strange. The whole thing took four minutes. Nothing terrible happened. I hung up feeling ridiculous and strangely proud of myself. A gentle, encouraging poem about overcoming the fear of attending something alone. It celebrates the quiet bravery of showing up, staying, and discovering that an unfamiliar situation might not be so frightening after all. The First Time I almost didn’t go. I didn’t know anybody there. I didn’t know what to wear. I imagined walking into a room where everyone already had friends. I sat in the parking lot for ten minutes, thinking of perfectly good excuses. Then I opened the door. Someone smiled and said hello. I smiled back and found a seat. I didn’t make a lifelong friend. I didn’t become a different person. But I stayed until the end, and next time, I might even be early. A heartfelt poem about learning that asking for help isn’t weakness. Through ordinary examples of struggling alone, it explores the relief of discovering that other people are often happy to lend a hand. Excuse Me I used to think asking for help meant admitting I wasn’t good enough. So I carried things that were too heavy, pretended I understood directions, and spent hours figuring out things someone could explain in minutes. Yesterday I finally said, “Could you give me a hand?” Nobody laughed. Nobody thought less of me. Someone simply said, “Of course.” And for the first time in years, I wondered how much easier life might be if I stopped trying to lift everything alone. A reflective, reassuring poem about realizing that growing older doesn’t necessarily mean becoming fearless. It suggests that courage is learning to live, make decisions, and find happiness even when fear remains. Still Scared I thought getting older would mean being less afraid. That eventually I’d wake up knowing exactly what I was doing. Instead, I’m still nervous before difficult conversations. I still worry about getting things wrong. I still imagine the worst sometimes. But now I make the call. I go to the appointment. I tell people how I feel. Maybe courage isn’t losing your fear. Maybe it’s learning you can be scared and still have a pretty good life.
