#BME680
(🧵) Got to build something useful today:

ESPHome-powered vent fan with an AQI sensor! ✨

Air circulation in my apartment sucks, so I build a smart fan with an ESP32-C3 that uses air quality info from a BME680 (humidity/CO2/VOC) to regulate fan speed~

Comes with night mode and hysteresis 🫶

My air quality logger is getting smaller!

Adding onboard battery capacity and moved some stuff around to consolidate.

Anyone have any experience designing their own PCB? I downloaded KiCAD and tried to slog thru but found it quite tough.

Mein Feinstaubsensor mit BME680 ist den beiden Jungkatzen zum Opfer gefallen.

Opened my BME680 boards, and one just... didn't have a BME680 on it?

Mounted the remaining two in my silly stack, I think it looks like the prototypical American gas grill now, or an adorable tiny cubesat.

Gunna code them up tomorrow.

The trick to getting this working was to start over using the instructions.

Ok, update time.
So a couple of days ago I acquired DS3231 and BME680 (I meant for it to be a BME280, but whatever) modules to help start prototyping my ESP32 alarm clock project. I've confirmed they work and I've started building the first proof-of-concept.

Some days I feel very smart. Some days I feel very silly because I spent an hour diagnosing what was wrong with my BME680 sensors, including partially rewiring the whole thing, and it's because I swapped the "read" and "write" bit (read is 1 msb address, write is 0 msb address, I was reading w/ 0)

They probably *should* spend the extra few cents and run some VOC sensors in the ventilation systems. It'll detect barf and anything else stinky. For an example, see the Bosch BME680.

The @seeedstudio.com SenseCAP P1 #Meshtastic repeater has a single Grove connector in the enclosure, which is perfect for something like a BME680 environment sensor. It’s great for broadcasting temperature, humidity, etc. in your area! #LoRa #electronics @digikey.bsky.social

Thought it would be cool to track environmental conditions on walks / bike rides. #ESP32 logs ride GPS & environmental data to a Pi/InfluxDB.

Created a web dashboard (Flask/Leaflet on Pi) which for now, tracks VOC, humidity, temp, pressure.

Shoutout gemini 2.5 & claude 3.7 for helping massively

Unexpected data leakage: I threw a BME680 in kid's room so we can keep better track of temps as it gets colder. This is derived from the gas sensor. Can you guess when we left our daughter in bed and when we went to go grab her in the morning?

Meadow can now run in an #AvaloniaUI application! This project on @Hacksterio shows atmospheric data from a BME680 sensor and a status LED blinking on every read! URL: wldrn.es/nzb #meadow #dotnet #avalonia #csharp #xaml #developer #graphics

Hey @adafruit.com friends!
Is the BME680 my best choice of your STEMMA breakouts for humidity sensing for low RH (<10) environments?

bme680 my beloved (are you running the library version with bosch funky closed source algorithm that guesses aqi value from voc)

The Adafruit BME688 sensor by Bosch offers temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and VOC gas sensing, with features like SPI or I2C. A 'drop-in' replacement for BME680, it has controlled odor-analysis capability and can be used as an altimeter.

Today I connected a BME680 to a @raspberrypi.com and created a little @prometheus.io exporter to feed my @grafana.bsky.social cloud instance.

I learned about I2C, BCM 2835, and smbus2. I'm graphing the data on a dashboard forked by spawn2kill.

Fun couple of hours, and I got to solder again.
