network activity is way up today, presumably driven by ICE shooting Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

this hasn't been showing up in Bluesky Trending Topics. that is not intentional, and we are still trying to debug why it hasn't.

we don't talk about prefs. they are unwell.

some bluesky services, including fulltext search, have delayed indexing right now, by 2-3 hours. working to resolve the infra issue, after which all content should be correctly indexed

nope, it's way funnier

came here because I was digging through relay error logs and found some weird ones.

did you attempt this with the reference PDS distribution? we should probably add a check there

an example where this doesn't hold is labels: if you rotate labeler signing key, you need to re-sign every label individually. what a pain! but the MST overhead was too high for labels, which are individually transcluded and should be verifiable

Auch darüber hat das 🦋 team SEHR viel nachgedacht.

this post is also a bit worrying bsky.app/profile/bnew...
eg, if even a small fraction of the network all posted 500 KByte records at the same time, the firehose would totally break.

if you tried to create/update more than a handful of 500 KByte records at the same time, the commit would be too large and dropped from firehose

many such cases

it's never fun being up all night trying to keep systems online, but it is great to see co-workers shine and just bulldoze through it.

we are not fully out of the woods on this incident, and it will probably be a while before there is any sort of post-mortem.

but not, it's not from vibe coding.

we want to allow this and are looking in to the (relatively small) technical issues that prevent it right now

ATProto could bootstrap a cryptographic trust layer for the Internet! User-controlled keys are everything.
bsky.app/profile/bnew...
in the long run, having a way for the PDS (or some sidecar) to generate new keypairs and sign things with those keypairs server-side could be a nice protocol primitive 🤔

in terms of archival mirrors, we want to get a full-network mirror up and running, which would help with bulk backfill as well as redundancy and disaster recovery. but we haven't gotten around to it yet

for atproto devs and protocol watchers, I published an overview of the network moderation architecture.

it tries to cover all the mod actions possible for each service type. this design has been around a while, but not well documented.

this doc is not very polished, but could clarify some details
AT Moderation Architecture | bryan newbold
The AT network is becoming more heterogeneous in practice, with independent PDS hosts, apps, and alternative bsky AppViews establishing themselves. This means that more complex inter-service moderatio...

We love a vision of shared pluralistic spaces.

but there is a failure mode here where one org ends up hosting all the infra, and the whole network is basically just the Facebook App Platform.

I'm much more in favor of cooperation between service providers, and allergic to "single special org" solutions to network-wide challenges...

I think it is great for folks to experiment with app experiences, and to give folks control over their own experience online.

but part of that is publicly debating design decisions, and I think both of these visibility features could have bad outcomes for the network...
#wsocial"/hashtag/wsocial" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link">#wsocial Just a reminder with AT Protocol Handler you can filter out basic handles from other services (also in reverse). Just requires using desktop or mobile browser that supports extensions instead of the apps.

if you want to chat about something sensitive, you can use Bluesky DMs to exchange contact info, but I would recommend moving the conversation to Signal.

Bluesky DMs are private, but they are not (yet) E2EE. Signal is hardened, focused, and does privacy/security best.

i think you are just supposed to follow the devs and get nervous when they post about opsec

bsky.app/profile/bnew...
just that period reminder that content posted to Bluesky is public to *anybody*. if you don't want to see it used in a court of law, don't post it here.

and DMs here are not E2EE, they can be subpoened. a great use for bsky DMs is to share secure comms and move the conversation there.
